"Yes. It is nearly finished, and it will be performed--but the lead role is more demanding than anything you have encountered. Well. Perhaps you could not live up to it..."
He casually baited the young tenor, the violin lifting into a trill and then flying off into a momentary, minor chardas before settling into the lazy phrase again.

*Carlos felt something pulling at him, something wrapping him in an unfamiliar, too-comfortable embrace, and with what part of him was left over suspected the violin.*
"Stop that," *he said, slightly befuddled, a frown on his childishly concerned face.* "You're... doing something."
*He blinked, trying to retain the thread of things.*
"That would be for you to judge, Maestro, but you will not tempt me into foolish anger. I am arrogant but I am not suicidal."

"Doing something?" He chuckled--the violin seemed to as well.
"That is good to know. Follow." He muttered casually and wound the tune with his strings again, causing Castro to fit his voice into the enchantment.

*Even as he knew there was some spell at work--or hypnotism, more accurately--Carlos could not help but do as commanded as the rest of his watched in mute outrage. He sang almost without thinking, without commanding his own vocal cords. He sang things he didn't know, and it surprised even him.*

When the little aria ended, the violin screeched again and Destler's voice growled around the room, not unpleasantly, actually.
"Much better, young man. Very good indeed."

*Carlos blinked, as if released, and shook his head. What was going on here?*
"But I was..." *He did not wish to admit that he'd been nearly insensible.* "But that is not... opera."

"No, that was something of my own invention. Impromptu. Did you enjoy it?"
His voice was eager now, beside the boy.

"It was... beautiful," *he said without thinking. His cheeks went slightly pinkish at the honesty of his blurted statement.*

"And you followed it beautifully. You see now what I can offer? How do you think your audience would react to something so perfectly constructed and fitted to your magnificent voice?"
The strings started up again, gently, caressing the young man's ego.

((Dirty!))
Magnificent?
*Somehow it sounded better coming from the Maestro than it had in the paper which had compared him unfavorably to Daae.*
"Oh, since you put it that way," *he said, smiling a little dreamily.*

((Ego! Ego!))
"Good. That is enough for today." The strings stopped, and the teacher's voice grew harder again.
"On your own, you will work on your scales, and this role you've secured in the new production. Be sure and read the part, senor, be prepared to act it. I will make myself familiar with the work tonight. And I will know if you've been shirking."

*With the music gone, Carlos suddenly felt as if his strings had been cut. He was exhausted. The prospect of studying anything tonight, of learning anything new, irritated him. But he was too tired to fight.*
"Of course, maestro," *he said automatically, wishing not for the first time he'd never given in to the urge to sing on stage mere days before.*

Unseen, the killer canted his head.
"You are tired?"

"Of course not," *Carlos said irritably.* "I can sing all day, if I must."

"If you attempt a rehersal in exhaustion you will only strain your voice. Rest if you must, you have done very well for this first lesson. Here: a gift at your bedside."
However it had got there, Carlos would find another little box on his nightstand, this with a pair of fine frosted gold cufflinks. And another of the teacher's calling cards, this one blank.
