The little man followed, and while he was exhausted, he was fairly certain he wouldn't be able to sleep in this house tonight, though it was assure the monster wouldn't return, at least for now.

*Enjolras headed to the right at the top of the stairs, and then went and flopped on his bed, exhausted. He didn't even bother to take off his boots.*

**NEW DAY, NEW PLOT**
*Enjolras sat in the sitting room, reading a newspaper and awaiting Chuck's arrival. Adrienne did the same, though she was embroidering her father's monogram onto one of his shirts. Badly. Every once in a while they would exchange a few words, sometimes laugh softly. Altogether they made a very laid-back, comfortable picture.*

*Chuck showed up at their door step, dressed quite fashionably sans jacket, thinking that being a bit less formal wouldn't hurt. He rang the door and stood there, fidgeting with the bottle of expensive champagne in his hands. As if that would help him if Enjolras decided to kill him.*

*The butler answered and showed him to the sitting room, where both Enjolras and Adrienne rose out of politesse.*
"There he is!" *Enjolras said jovially.* "But why on earth do you look as if you're about to be run through?"
*Adrienne smiled awkwardly and attempted not to look anywhere but at the coat of arms on the wall.*

*Chuck looked over at Adrienne but quickly diverted his gaze to the man.*
*He shrugged and grinned.*
"Must be the weather. It's getting rather hot," *he said, extending his handing to him.*

"Indeed... which is exactly what I wished to discuss. Adi, ring for tea, would you?"
*Adrienne nodded and went to the wall, where she tugged a red velvet cord. It connected to a bell in the kitchens, which rung and informed the maid waiting with the tray to come in.*
*Enjolras, seating himself, motioned for Chuck to do the same.*
"I assume you haven't any plans for the summer?"

*He sat down, trying not to seem awkward.*
"Not really, no."
*It was the first time he'd thought about summer. Days just seemed to bleed into each other for him.*

*When the maid got there and set down the tray, Adrienne rose to begin pouring, still avoiding looking at Chuck.*
*Enjolras nodded and thought for a moment.*
"Well, as it gets dreadfully hot and smelly here in the summer, and as all proper society slows down, Adrienne and I would like to extend an invitation to spend the summer with us at our home in Normandy." *He said amiably. Really he was in a good mood today--Adrienne had taken off work (teaching summer school) and a particular risky investment he'd made in a mill was evidently going well.*

*Chuck found himself watching her hands as she poured. His reaction to his question was very late.*
"If... it's alright with your daughter, I can't say I have any objections," *he said, finally taking his eyes away from her and meeting his with a confidence that he wasn't quite feeling at the moment.*

*Adrienne sat after pouring out the tea and handing it to them.*
"I've no objection." *She said politely. It wasn't as if she could contradict her father anyway.*
*Enjolras beamed.*
"Well it's settled, then. We leave a week from tomorrow."

*Grinning, Chuck drank some of the tea.*
"You've been so kind to me. I wish there was a way to repay you, sir," *he said courteously. And he was being quite sincere, too.*

*Enjolras smiled and clapped him on the shoulder.*
"Really, it's no trouble. It's been nice to see Adrienne smile around someone other than her students."
*With that, said Adrienne turned right red.* "Really, Papa..."
"It's true! I haven't seen you in such a consistent good mood since your school acceptance letter came when you were eleven."

*Chuck smiled and laughed a little.*
"I'm sure it isn't because of me," *he said, self-deprecatingly.*

*After that the afternoon passed pleasantly, with talk of travel arrangements and what sort of weather to expect and that sort of thing.*
