((Man, I'm getting Snow White flashbacks.))
*Héloïse grunted lightly, caught between surprise and the last vestiges of secrecy in her doings.*
"This is nothing to do with you, boy," *she replied, her voice a softly feral growl, though it retained the cultured accent of the dowager comtess who had once ruled Parisian society.*

*Becca's eyes flew open at the noise, searching the darkness as she froze in horror.*
That voice...I know that voice...
"...you..." *her voice trembled in the silence.*

"...who else?" *snapped Héloïse, exposing all her motivations like every good villain backed into a corner.* "I went awry years ago...when you were still only a dumb slut to be tangled into an unfortunate match with my son...a match which turned out to be worthless...he should never have married you, but he did...and I...all I could do--all I should have done...would have been a single drop more in your tea...and you would have perished as you were meant to...along with the abomination in your womb!"

"All that you've done...everything...Carolina--for some misplaced need for revenge?"
*There was an undertone to the incredulity in his voice. Something dark*
"Threatening people's lives, their sanity, their safety because of some obsession?" He spat.

*Héloïse turned her eyes to the man who still held her by the wrist.*
"How dare you fling such hypocrisy in my face, monsieur?" *she hissed.* "You decry my seeking revenge against the woman who destroyed my one favourite son! You who would do anything to avenge your small daughter..."
*A gleam entered her eye.*
"--is it not so, monsieur?"

"Hypocrisy? I'm not the one that's tried to kill people! And I would not take lives in this case. What I will do is the right thing--and you, Madame, are going to prison."
*He narrowed his eyes*
"But first thing's first--where is she?"

*Héloïse laughed, the sound beginning silently, crescendoing slowly into an eerie cackle.*
"Prison...prison...rotting away the worthless end of my life in some damp dungeon...as opposed to the abominable cellars of this--my home--MINE, monsieur! You do me great service...to repay me for what I have done to your daughter..."
*Again, the cackle.*
"...my son is dead..." *she hissed.* "I can not bring him back, but by God, I can make you suffer as I have!"
*So saying, she downed the contents of the vial of poison with a gulp. She spluttered and grinned at them, drool and droplets of poison streaming from the corners of her mouth.*
"...torture me if you dare bother, monsieur...you have little time to make me talk...and I could say nothing to satisfy you..." *she wheezed.* "The...princess...is...dead..." *she said, beginning to choke on her own words, her eyes rolling back in her skull as she fell to the floor.*

Rudolf didn't react fast enough to stop her, her action so unexpected that he didn't react until too late. In shock, he finally let go, then quickly got to his feet.
"No! You lie...she's not...she's not..."

((Don't worry, she's not.))
*Héloïse breathed her last, still smiling crazily. Becca was still frozen with terror and disbelief.*
"...Rudolf..." *her voice was a rasping whisper.* "She...she's..."
*She turned her tortured eyes to her husband.*
"...Caro...my baby...she's..."
*She shook her head, unable to go on.*

((Of course not. ^___^ ))
He spared one last enraged glare for Heloise before turning to his wife.
“I can’t believe her. I refuse. After everything she’s done, why should I not expect a lie?”
He didn’t feel as sure about it as he sounded, and pulled Rebecca into his arms, just as much seeking comfort as giving it.
“I can’t…I…won’t believe…”

"I can believe anything of her evil..." *said Rebecca hollowly, even as she held Rudolf tightly.* "...she has killed before...her own grandchild...and more than once has she tried for my life..."
*She was silent for a time.*
"It was her...on the roof...years ago...I know it, now. She's been watching us...all this time."
*She buried her face against his shoulder with a sob.*
"I'm sorry...I thought...I thought we could be safe here, in this house. What have I done?"

"Don't blame yourself. This...it sounds like she'd been planning it all for a long time."
He was trying not to look at the body lying on the floor, trying not to see it.
"And not only that, but gone mad in the meantime."

"...she always was, a little, I think..." *said Becca softly.
After a pause:*
"Perhaps...we should...call...someone...do...something..."

"Yes...quickly..."
He didn't know if he could stand to think of Heloise any longer.
He moved across the bed, getting out on the side away from the body on the floor. He didn't move for a second, irrationally afraid to leave Rebecca there with it.
"My love, why don't you come out into the hall..."

*Becca didn't wait to be asked twice, turning away with a shudder and scooting after her husband, getting out of bed and reaching for a shawl to put on over her nightgown.*
