*Upon receiving the call from the coast guard earlier that night, Maxim went down to the boathouse- the last place anyone would try to look for him. He sank onto a worn and dusty sofa, his head in his hands.
She'd won. There was nothing left for him now...*

*By some strange twist of fate, on a tipoff from Frank and a definite feeling he'd go there if Rebecca was really an issue, Micaela opened the door with a creak and tentatively looked in.*
"Maxim?" *She asked, uncharacteristically quietly, with one hand still on the door handle and one bunched in the pocket of her sweater.*

"You haven't slept."
*He stood, watching her with dark, tortured eyes. His face was drawn and haggard, and there were dark circles under his eyes.*

"Neither have you." *She said uselessly. She didn't know what else to say; he looked like he'd been steamrolled, and she was almost afraid to go closer for fear he would freak out. And she knew he'd freak out, as if she'd read it somewhere.*
"They found the boat." *She said, the unsaid and a body hanging in the damp, cold air.*

Magda, unaware that anything was going on inside the boathouse, sat down outside it, shivering in spite of her own cold-bloodedness. Stupid Severus...

"Yes," *he said.* "It's all over now. The thing has happened."

"What thing?" *She asked, closing the door and taking a few steps in his direction.*

Magda heard the door shut and jumped, certain she would be caught. She froze.

"The thing I've always forseen. The thing I've dreamt about, day after day, night after night. We're not meant for happiness, you and I."
*He sat down heavily on the window seat.*

*Something in the pit of her stomach suddenly disappeared and made a vacuum for the rest of her organs. Despite this, she finally moved to where he was and turned his face with one hand, her touch gentle but insistent.*
"Maxim, what are you talking about?" *She asked, though the weight in the pit of her stomach told her that she knew, and it made her sick. She knew, she just couldn't remember anything except it was something bad.*

"Rebecca has won."
*He gingerly put his arms around her, then more tightly, and looked at her hopelessly.*
"Her shadow between us all the time," *he said.* "Her damned shadow keeping us from one another. How could I hold you like this, my darling, with the fear always in my heart that this would happen? I remembered her eyes as she looked at me before she died. I remember that slow, treacherous smile. She knew this would happen even then. She knew she would win in the end."

"Maxim, what the hell are you... why are... wh..." *She stammered, but soon her face was turning pink and her eyes dark with anger.* "Nobody's won anything, Maxim, especially not Rebecca!" *Her voice rose just a little.*

"I understand perfe..."
*She suddenly felt very weak.*
"Maxim, who is lying on the cabin floor?" *She asked weakly.*

Magda's curiosity got the better of her, and she leaned in to listen.
