Starmane followed him, frightened by the stench of the rotting flesh and dried blood. She walked as close to Devon as she could. She looked around, and her beautiful light green eyes were a bit anxious. She smuggled her tiny hand into Devon's.

Devon, in his own anxiety, did not notice this action of hers. If anything, it seemed that he himself slightly squeezed her hand for reassurance.
"Quickly, now. They're nearly here."
He tugged at her and led her into a concealed thicket.

Starmane followed Devon without protesting. She knew how dangerous the orcs were. And she didn't have any weapons! She was a healer, not a murderer. Now, looking at the orcs coming up the hill behind them, she could kill for a weapon.

"It's no use. They'll catch onto our scent," he whispered hoarsely.
Still, he pulled Starmane and himself deeper into the shadows of the thicket, possibly in the vain hope that the dark would erase any traces of their presence.

Starmane was pressed as far into the thicket as she could possibly get. There was a wall of stone behind her, and she couldn't move any further. Around her there was thicket everywhere, except from where Devon was, of course.
The orcs became visible at the top of the hill. Starmane could see them from her hiding place. They were lurking around, like they were smelling something. They were grey, with long filthy hair hanging from their ugly bodies. They had red eyes and sharp teeth, and they were stinking. Starmane's heart beat fast from fear, and she grabbed Devon's hand in panic, holding on to him.

Devon uttered a hasty prayer to whatever God there was.
"We cannot run now. Whether it's intentional or not, they've got us trapped," he stated, throwing a sidelong glance at Starmane. The orcs marched down from the crest of the hill, their ghastly stench penetrating the underbrush in which Devon and Starmane hid.
In the midst of their predicament, Devon could not help asking, "They smell worse than me, do they not?"

The Wolfriders didn't have any gods. Their rituals were circling about their ancestors. Starmane silently prayed that the spirits of her own ancestors would guide her through this.
Starmane watched silently as the orcs marched down from the crest of the hill. Their ghastly stench made her shudder, and she moved closer to Devon. His question made her blush, and she lowered her eyes and whispered shyly.
"I never meant to say that to you. I'm sorry I did. You don't smell. I just said that because I wanted to provoke you. They smell much worse than you."

"Wait here," Devon growled, taking off before Starmane could argue.
In his wolf form, he made for the crest of the hill opposite the orcs and sat back on his haunches to emit a raw, baritone howl. The orcs grunted and turned towards the source of the noise; noticing Devon, they broke into a run after him. Devon, however, wheeled and bounded away, just slipping from their terrible grasp.

Starmane gasped when she noticed he took off.
She watched him change to his wolf form, and how he made for the crest of the hill opposite the orcs. She watched him sitting back on his haunches and emitting a raw, baritone howl.
With horror she noticed how the orcs grunted and broke into a run after him. Her eyes filled with tears, and her body started trembling as an unfamiliar pain washed over her. No matter what she had thought about him, she didn't want him to end up as orc bait. But he had told her to wait, so she couldn't do anything. She noticed he wheeled and bounded away, just slipping from their terrible grasp.
With beating heart and tearfilled eyes she waited for him to return to her. The trembling in her body wouldn't stop.

Devon stealthily crept back into the thicket. The white fur of his coat was not covered in sweat, nor were his sides heaving with the effort to breathe. It was as if he had never left, had never run.
"Missed me much?" he said, marking Starmane's extreme trembling.

Starmane felt so relieved he was back that she could have kissed him. But the memories about the words he had said to her during their first, unfortunate meeting made her hesitant to admit what she felt. She had told him that she found him more sympathetic than humans, and he had said that he didn't find anything sympathetic about her. Even if she was unwilling to admit it, his words hurt her - and she did not want to get hurt again.
Instead of telling him about the joy she felt when she saw him alive after taking such chances, she turned her face away from him, to hide the tears in her eyes.
"Since when did you start caring about my feelings?" she asked quietly.

"Well, that may be the problem. I never said I did care."
He remained a wolf. Occasionally, Devon would tilt his head back, wrinkling his nose, to sample the air.
"They're gone," he said, at long last.

"Oh, is that so? So why did you risk your life to get the orcs away from me? If you didn't care, why didn't you leave me to the orcs?"
Her voice was dryly sarcastic. She had seen the looks he had given her when she slipped into her skimpish outfit. She crawled out of the bushes and started brushing off her hair and clothes, and discreetly removed a bewildered leaf from under her clothes.
"Is there any chance they may come back?"
She did not feel safe here. If the orcs were coming back, she would be defenseless.

"You know, I'm not a monster," he returned with a glare. Devon followed after Starmane, striding out from the thicket and grooming himself.
"Yes, unfortunately, they'll be back. But there is, however, a cave not far from here."

"No, you just behave like one..." she teased and looked up at him with glittering eyes.
By his mentioning the orcs would return she shuddered and walked closer to him. She didn't want to anger him. She needed his protection.
"Is it your cave?" she asked shyly.
