"Eva..." Steerpike said softly.
He saw the way Haldir was staring at him, and hsi lip twitched slightly.
"Is something wrong, Captain?"

*Haldir shook his head and smiled briefly.*
"No, not at all. At this moment...."
*He looked worried as he thought about how both the shamans of Lorien were too busy to take care of the nation's safety. He wondered if any of them had taken the time to check out the Devil people.*

Steerpike pulled the other man into the hallway for a moment.
"I know how deeply this country is still mourning the loss of the former queen, Captain, and I wish there was something I could do."

*Haldir sighed.*
"Nothing can bring her back. Unless Leetah and Wild come up with a chant who can bring the dead back to life. They are both smart enough to do that. But now they are busy. Leetah has an idea about how to get rid of.... THEM."

"Yes, the hell-things," he sighed impatiently. "But that's not what I was talking about, Haldir."

"So tell me what you was talking about."

"When you mentioned the former queen- your face- did something turn up?"

*Haldir sighed and smiled sadly.*
"I guess there is no use hiding it any longer. It doesn't matter anymore. But I loved her. The pain of losing her will never go away."
*Then he got serious.*
"There is something I have to mention for you. You have claimed all along that the king tried to murder the queen. But our investigations are showing that the king was dead about 30 minutes before the queen died. You know... that DOES look suspicious."

He'd been expecting this to come back up. and he gave Haldir a deeply sorrowful look.
"I understand that it must, Captain, but as I told you before, he did not kill her instantly. No, her death was lingering and painful. It had already befun the moment he stabbed her, and she lay languishing while we fought. She did indeed die thirty minutes or so later than her husband, Captain."
He sighed.
"And yet for all his corruption and madness, he named me his heir. I feel I misjudged him."

*Haldir sighed too.*
"You know, Steerpike, you DID misjudge him. His father dethronized him because of his incompetence as a king, naming Queen Tearbird as the rightful ruler of Lorien. So she was the one in power. He had no right to name an heir. And even if he had, he would never give his power to a human. Not in a world of elves."

"Perhaps it was his madness that lead him to that decision, then."
Damn him.
"And Tearbird is dead now as well. Such a pity."
He smiled in at his wife and child for a moment, then looked back at Haldir.
"My daughter," he said quietly. "Your princess."

*Haldir smiled.*
"Perhaps it was. It is too late to ask him. But our queen, Tearbird, left a will, where she is mentioning Leetahs child her heir. And since Tearbird was the rightful queen of Lorien, her will outranges his."
