As the group of Elves laid Eleanor on the bed, Steerpike anxiously grabbed her hand.

*Sam Vimes managed to push his way through.*
"Too bad, kid. You were that close."

Steerpike ignored him, but one could see his face momentarily harden.

*Vimes began to reach for a cigar, but even he had a certain amount of propriety, and decided against it.*
"You're smart, I'll give you that. And she was always nice. If you two were in a more honest racket, like selling fake gold watches, I could almost like you."
*He sighed*
"You knew I used to be a drunk, and that I only had non-alcaholic drinks now. Why do you think she reached for it?"

"Someone escort this man outside," Steerpike snapped to the air in general, wincing.

*He took a step forward, ahead of the guards*
"She was carrying your child."

"I said, someone, escort this man out!"
But there was an unmistakeable crack in his voice now, as though he were trying hard to restrain himself.

*Vimes stood still, still staring at the king*
I'm a bad diplomat- I'd be the first to admit it- but I'm a good copper. And I know a guilty face when I see one.
"It's your conscience", *he said as he turned to leave*

He leaned over his wife's supine form, pulled away the circlet over her forehead, brushed back her hair with his hand.
He wanted to apologize. It was his fault, and the child...
But the room was full, and all he said was "Eleanor...", very softly.

*A soft, melodic voice could be heard from the door.*
"Move outside, please! Give the woman some air! Open a window!"
*The crowd moved outside, and a small, dark woman with long, dark hair and green eyes appeared in the room. She looked at Steerpike with glittering eyes.*
"She has been poisoned. How did this happen?"

"I know how it happened!" he shouted. "Someone means to destroy us-"
He saw suddenly that he recognized her. Oh God... after all this time...
"Lady Leetah," he said stiffly.

"The same way the former king and queen of Lorien were destroyed? The way to the throne of Lorien is colored in blood of the innocents."
*Leetah's eyes darkened at the sight of him. Still she managed to keep her cool.*
"Lord Steerpike," she replied.
*Her eyes softened as she bent over the bed to take care of the unconscious woman. Leetah placed her hands over Eleanor's heart, and fell into the well-known healing trance. Her hands began to glow as she worked her way over Eleanor's body. Then, at last, she opened her eyes again and spoke to Steerpike in a quiet voice.*
"I tried my best to save her life. And I saved the life of the girl. But the boy could not be rescued. I am so sorry."

*Figwit followed the party silently, stationing himself unseen outside the bedroom. When Vimes--who seemed to know something--emerged, he stepped quietly in his way.*
"I must speak with you," *he said softly.*

*Leetah looked at him seriously.*
"You didn't know? And yes, she is. They are twins, or at least, they were. As I told you, the boy died. The girl is still alive, but if I don't get out the dead child, she will die too. The boy died from poisoning. It is best to remove the child now, while the mother is unconscious. But I need permission from the child's father to do so."
