*Guido looked at the little face in front of him, realizing something terrible must have happened during the night. He became serious.*
"Signorina! What has happened?"

She smiled, a very unconvincing smile, and shook her head.
"Nothing's happened. I...didn't sleep well, that's all."
Her voice was high, and strained, and the cheery lilt to it was pathetically forced. Her eyes rested on the wall behind his head, as she was unable to look him in the eye.

*Guido kneeled down in front of the little girl and looked her in the eyes. His voice was warm and caring as he spoke to her mildly.*
"Signorina. I have worked in the police force of Venice for many years. I have met people from all walks of life. Different people. And still, they react the same way as you do when something bad happens to them. If you don't want to tell me what happened, I can't help you."

She stared at him for a moment, but then her eyes turned to glass and she lowered her head, tears running down her cheeks.

*Guido was a family father himself. Seeing a little girl cry, made his warm heart fill with compassion. He carefully put his arms around her, holding her comforting, like he had comforted his own children when they were crying. His voice were warm and caring.*
"Aaaaaw, little signorina. Tell me what is wrong."

She rested her forehead against his shoulder, crying in pathetic little hiccupping sobs.
"There was a man," she mumbled, biting her lip.

*Guido cradled her in his arms, stroking her hair gently, as he had done with his own children when they were crying. His voice was worried.*
"A man? Did he do anything?"

She cried a little harder, mumbling a strangled little "mhm" and taking her head from his shoulder long enough to nod.

*Guido gritted his teeth, angry at the bastard who dared to hurt little children like that. He took a deep breath to calm himself, then he asked her:*
"What did he do?"

The sobs quieted slightly, though tears still streamed down her cheeks.
"He came in," she whispered. "while I was asleep."

*Guido held the child closer to his heart, rocking her gently in his arms as he spoke comforting to her.*
"What happened next?"

"He talked to me, and he did things, and then he left," she said hurriedly, wiping her eyes. "And then I went back to bed, and then it was morning, and then you came."

*Guido stroke her hair gently.*
"Hold it there, young lady. What things did the man do? If I shall arrest him, I have to know exactly what he did."

"I had a little money on the chair," she told him nervously, backing out of his arms to point at it. "He took it. And he..." She shrugged, her eyes starting to water again, and looked away.

*Guido furrowed his eyebrows. His eyes were worried for the little girl's safety.*
"He what? Did he do something adults should never do to children? Do I need to take you to a doctor or something?"
*He stroke her hair gently.*
