"And that is based on the logic that you are not in command of your own functions then? We cannot blame others for our own actions, however influenced we may feel them to be.It takes away our ablity to feel, think and understand for ourselves.Perhaps I did influence you, yes but I shall not take the blame for the results of that as, I have no doubt you would not take responsiblity for my actions.I do feel sorry for your state but, of course as I am sure you recall the affection in our marriage was entirely one sided."
*He continued, a trace of irony in his tone.*
"Therefore, it becomes safe to assume that only one person was hurt is it not?"
*It frustrated no end to see her behaving like this, almost incapable of understanding any logic of his. But she was still so young. Perhaps he was to blame, though not for the reasons she would think. He was amazed at the fluency of his language, whilst his heart felt as if it had shattered. Perhaps that was what this numbness was.*
"Now, I doubt that, though I am basing my understanding on your own logic, so I at best can only be right."

"Whatever the case may be, whoever is right, whoever is wrong--you hurt me, and you can't just wipe that away."
*She gazed at him with tears in her eyes, something aching deep inside her to look at him and have to say these things that needed to be said.*
"I have to protect myself. I'm not strong enough to go back, to risk everything, again."
*Her hands were shaking, absently she wrung them together, trying to get them to stop.*
"W-what if you hurt me, again? God damn it, Philippe, I don't even--I can't even imagine it."
*She bowed her head, tears threatening as she tried to calm herself, in very real distress.*
"You've never tried to understand me...or love me. Only possess me."
*She glanced at the papers on the table.*
"They're there for you to sign--and I can only beg that you do. I cannot make you."
*She went to the door, pausing, once.*
"I'll love you until the day I die, and I despise myself for that."
*Choking on a sob, she fled, finding Monsieur Fortesque, who said nothing about her red eyes and rough voice.*
"We must leave at once."
*He took her arm and patted it, leading her away.*
"You needn't return, or see him alone, milady. I can deal with him from now on."

"You've never tried to understand me...or love me. Only possess me."
*Philippe watched her leave the room before he sank to the floor. How could he take this?.*
"I'll love you until the day I die, and I despise myself for that."
*But she was protecting herself, against him. He could not grasp it. He did love her, he knew that he did. What he felt was surely all he could feel of love. He glanced down at the papers. He would not sign them yet, he would but not yet.*
"I must believe that there is a chance."
*He spoke to the silent room. Idly he rubbed his heart, which had twinged a little oddly. Glancing down he looked at it.*
"And you, shall not start again."
