*Nessa helped her wiping away her tears with a napkin, but still with an arm around the girl's shoulder, in case she needed to cry some more.*
"You are welcome to stay here for as long as you like, as I am sure Haldir has told you already. Take all the time you need to heal, and to settle down. When the day comes that you get your memories back, I am sure we will help you out anyway we can, to find out about what has happened to your family."

*Katya nodded, looking a bit thoughtful as she calmed down*
"But, surely, I can't stay for free? I should pay you rent for your hospitality."

*Nessa smiled and shook her head.*
"Katya, didn't Haldir tell you? You are in Lorien now. We don't need money here. We get everything we need by using our magic. And we have the two most powerful shamans the Elves have ever seen. Leetah, with her White Magic, and Wild with her Black Magic. They are both a little wild, and not like other girls you might have met, but they have warm hearts. Even though they would deny it if you asked them. You don't have to be afraid of them."

*She looked very startled, but fascinated, at the same time*
"Magic? Elves? But, I thought these things did not exist..."
*She glanced at Nessa's ear, seeing the shape.*
"Oh!"

*Nessa smiled warmly.*
"You don't have to be afraid of me, Katya. And not for any of the other elves in Lorien either."
*She said gently.*
"I have been Queen Tearbird's chamber maid all my life, and I don't even know if I can DO magic. I have never tried my strength. And besides, I belong to the Light Elves, just like Leetah and Haldir. We possess White Magic. There are Dark Elves too. Wild is a Dark Elf. The Dark Elves possess very powerful Black Magic. So Wild uses her powers to protect us from harm. She is a bit wilder than the rest of us, but she is not dangerous to innocent girls like you."

"I just...didn't know...everyone said there was no such thing..."
*She reached out, as though touch Nessa's ear, but quickly pulled her hand*
"Oh, sorry, that's very rude of me."

"Well, the humans don't believe we exist. Which is lucky for us, because then they don't come looking for us. Or try to wipe us off the surface of the earth."
*Nessa smiled warmly.*
"No, that's ok. You can touch my ears if you want to. I don't mind. It's better you explore and satisfy your curiosity than screaming out in fear and run away in panic."
*She tilted her head, offering Katya to touch her ears.*

"Oh, I could never afraid of you. You're far too nice to be frightening."
*She hesitated a moment before reaching out to touch the tip of Nessa's ear. It was real, of course, and felt as skin should feel*
"That's incredible! I mean, it is all so wonderful that these things exist."

"Thank you. I would be very unhappy if anyone got afraid of me. I concider myself to be a calm and peaceful girl."
*She smiled by Katya's gentle touch and explained.*
"We elves inhabitated this planet long before the humans arrived. There were other creatures here then. Dangerous ones that were always lurking around. To survive their attacks we had to develop our eyesight and hearing to the extreme. We can see in the darkness, and what is invisible to others. And we can hear things that are whispered far away. Our pointy ears make our hearing even sharper."
*She looked at Katya, pleased with her new friend.*
"And you are not bad yourself. I admire the way you react to your new surroundings. So completely without being prejudiced. I didn't think humans could be as noble as you."

*She listened with genuine interest to what Nessa had to say, utterly fascinated by her new friend's people*
"I try not to judge people just on appearance. I do my best to be open-minded when I first meet someone."
*She was gazing at Nessa with open curiosity*
"It must something, to have such abilities. I wish I could hear better or see far, or even do magical things."

"I wish there were more humans like you, Katya. Most humans aren't so open-minded. They freak out when they find out that we can read their minds."
*Nessa smiled warmly.*
"That was another of the abilites we had to develop when we arrived on this planet. We found out it was dangerous to communicate, because the enemy could hear us and kill us. So we started this mindreading, as a silent way to communicate. All elves can read minds, even those who don't usually practice magic. And the magic we possess.... We brought our skills with us from our original homeland, and developed it further here, to adapt to our hostile surroundings."

*She looked wistfully at Nessa*
"I wonder if you could read the mind of someone who can't remember anything..."

*Nessa looked sadly into Katya's eyes, squeezing her hand gently.*
"Unfortunately not. I can only read the thoughts people are thinking at the moment. Usually when they can't remember anything, they don't think about it. But if you want me to, I can talk to one of our shamans about it. They are much more powerful than I am."
*The thundering sounds continued outside the window. Now and then there was a lightening flashing in the night. The wind was howling, and the rain was pouring down.*

"Good grief! Are all storms here like this?"
*She glanced at the window a moment before returning her attention back to Nessa, squeezing her hand back*
"I'd like that. I thought I found a healer who could help, but I haven't seen him again and I wonder if perhaps he's forgotten about me."
But I have not forgotten. For he is from my lost memories, I am sure of it.

"Oh, no. This storm is rather unusual. According to our old legends, special things would always happen on nights like these. We call them Nights of Destiny. Something fatal usually happens. Let's hope that the legends are wrong this time."
*Nessa smiled and kept Katya's hand in her own, trying to comfort the girl.*
"I can take you to meet Leetah or Wild tomorrow morning, as soon as the storm is over. What was the name of the healer you met? Perhaps we know him?"
