*The Duchess smiled and looked over at the girl.*
"Have you ever heart about the French writers Voltaire, Rousseau, and Montesquieu? They have all written very interesting books about the development of the society, and I have to admit I am fascinated by the way they think."

*The girl shook her head, returning to nibbling on her bread.*
"Suppose their some charming rich fellows, fancy coats and nice shoes..."

*María laughed heartily and looked over at the girl with a glimpse of humor in her eyes.*
"Well, I think they are all either dead now, or terribly old. I have never met them, just read their books."

"All right..." *The girl didn't seem convinced on the relation to the current situation.*
"And they what? Tell you to debase yourself with the...lessers of society? All about charity and such?"

*María arched her eyebrow in surprise.*
"Lessers of society? Dear girl, don't you follow the news of the world? The Law of independence written in The New World in 1776?"
*She smiled and quoted.*
"All men are born equal.... , I think that is a lovely thought. No difference based on who you are, what class you belong to, or the color of your skin. Just... liberty."

*The girl looked up, very confused. And a little concerned. She lowered her voice.*
"You should not speak...so. There is a war going on, don't you know? A woman like yourself...saying such things. It is treason."

*María Sheila de Lefévre had recently returned from her summer resort in Medici, Italy. So she had heard nothing about the war. Her face paled, but it was not on her own behalf she was concerned.*
"A war? I recently returned to France. When did this start? And what has happened?"

*She shrugged, eyes widened, unsure.*
"It is not for someone like me to know such things. Just...many people have died."

*The Duchess shook her head in disbelief, her eyes saddened.*
"Such a waste of human lives."
*She whispered with tearfilled eyes.*
"And for what purpose?"

*She was quiet for some time. Then her voice rose meekly.*
"To be what you are. To have what you have." *The answer was simple, though the implication complex.*

*The Duchess looked at the girl in disbelief for a moment, before leaning back in her chair, closing her eyes in disbelief.
She thought about her dark, empty haunted castle, where ghosts were roaming about. She thought about her nightly torments by the demon trying to possess her, to harm her. She thought about all the nights she had been sleepless, out of fear to be haunted in her dreams by ghostly riders. And when she woke up, it was to the sounds of her own screams.
María shuddered and wrapped her arms protectively around her. The mere thought of her troubles made her look tired. And tormented.*
"I don't think anyone would like to be what I am, or have what I have."
*Her voice was tired, belonging to a human that already had been through much more torture than anyone can endure.*

*The girl sighed and shook her head.*
"I don't mean that part. I mean the other. The part they can see."
*She frowned privately.*
"No one would want the rest."

*The Duchess opened her eyes slowly, looking back at the girl again, with a sad smile.*
"Yes, the part that they can see. A life in a golden cage, where you will have to act exactly as they say, do as they want, try to fulfill every demand they give you. Living the life they chose, even marry the men they want."
*She rubbed her temples.*
"I would give it all up if I could have just one day of their freedom, to make my own choices and just for once let go off all the responsibilities and do what I want."
*She added more quietly.*
"I would never have told you this, if I thought you were like one of them."

***AS LOST *GRUMBLES* ***
*The girl watched the other carefully, thinking deeply on something.*
"Then...why don't you?"
*It seemed simple enough.*
"In such a time of political upheaval, there's no reason you couldn't slip away, abandon what you've been given and..."
*She glanced before the lady for a moment with a frown, then continued softer.*
"Start a new life for yourself. As one of the people. Free to make your own choices."

"I would love to. But I would need a job, and a place to live."
*Her eyes sparkled for a moment, by the thought of a new life in freedom. Then she became serious again, and her voice saddened.*
"But even as one of the people... they would never leave me alone...."
