*Sam Vimes paced about his room, running over everything in his head.
First of all, the kid. Steerpike. Smart, certainly more than Ordaug, and charismatic. He'd liked him, if only for their shared disdain of inherited monarchy. But dammit, seventeen was not old enough to be running the country. Sure, you had teenage coppers, but you didn't make them head of the Watch.
Then, there was the note. It was Ordaug's handwriting- he'd confirmed that. The wrong hand, but the same hand. So the question remained, why? Either he was wrong and the letter had been forged, or something had happened to his right hand, something no one knew about.
As for Nessa...well, he knew he'd been harsh with her, and felt rotten about it. But the simple truth was, she'd hid evidence from the court in order to get the kid elected. It sounded an awful lot like a setup, with what she'd said about the 'test'. But it was hard to imagine her doing something like that...which didn't make it impossible.
Who would benefit from the death of the royal couple? Well, Steerpike. And Nessa, if she told the truth about his constant threats of rape (although why she'd then try and get him involved would involve something more intricate). And there were many he didn't even know who'd hated the king.
He sighed as he lit a cigar. This was the trouble with being a copper- crime followed you everywhere.*

****NEW DAY*************'
*Nightfall was sitting on a rock near the river, staring at her mirror in the water. She didn't recognize the woman staring back at her. Her mother had used her magic to make Nightfall grow up faster, to prepare her for marriage. Gone were the happy days of her childhood, and her entire world had collapsed.
Tears were fallling from her eyes, and she felt terribly unhappy. How could mother give her away as a bride, just to force her to behave better? Staring down at her reflection in the water, her vision a little blurred from her tears, she started singing. Her voice sounded clear and beautiful above the water, and the sound carried away over the green meadows and the forests of Lorien.*
Look at me, I will never pass for a perfect bride. Or a perfect daughter. Can it be I'm not meant to play this part? Now I see that if I were truly to be myself, I would break my family's heart.
Who is that girl I see Staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know? Somehow I cannot hide who I am, Though I've tried. When will my reflection show, Who I am inside?
When will my reflection show Who I am inside?

"Your singing is quite lovely, you know." Said a quiet voice.

*Nightfall startled and looked up. She had thought she was alone. She noticed Prince Legolas and blushed deeply.*
"Thank you." *She replied and looked up at him with her beautiful, green eyes.* "Do you sing or play any instruments, Your Highness?"

*He slowly started walking over, his footsteps not making a sound*
"I sing, sometimes, though not as well as you." He said, smiling wryly.
"I'm not very Elvish when it comes to music."

*Nightfall blushed and looked up at him again. She was still not very sure what she felt about him.*
"Did my mother tell you about her plans? About the two of us getting married?"

*He nodded, his expression more serious*
"I wish it weren't under these circumstances. But, parents will always do things their children aren't too fond of."

*Nightfall blushed and looked down at her hands, folded hardly to stop her from trembling.*
"I know. If it weren't under these circumstances.... would you have proposed to me? Or do you marry me just because our parents expects you to?"
*She felt a little shocked that she had dared to ask him this question, but for her it was important to know what he felt about this thing. She didn't want a man who HAD to marry her.*

"I don't know," he said honestly.
"Perhaps, if we'd been friends before, it might have been a consideration. But...I don't often come to Lorien, as Mirkwood is my home. I might have never met you if this hadn't happened."

*Nightfall nodded. She had been thinking the same thing.*
"So... Are you glad or sorry this happened?"

"Well..."
*He glanced around at the scenery*
"I'm glad to visit Lorien, and sorry that my parents and your mother felt that we should be shoved together."
*His expression softened*
"I'm sorry we had to meet like this."

*Nightfall looked up at him. Her anger and hurt feelings disappeared and gave her face a softer look. The sun shone down at her silky, dark hair, and gave her skin a warm tone, and her beautiful eyes were glittering. Her soft, cherry lips parted in a radiant smile, flashing her white, perfect teeth.*
"Yes, so am I. I wish we at least could get to know each other better before the wedding. Mother seems determined to let the seremony happen as soon as possible."
*Nightfall laughed, a little helpless.*
"She must be afraid you will change your mind if you get to know me first."

*He scoffed*
"You aren't so frightening. Besides, I somehow think that if I tried to leave, I'd be brought right back."
*The words were serious, but there was humor in the way he said it.*

*Nightfall grinned.*
"You must be the only person in the world who don't think I'm frightening. You could ask anyone here in Lorien, and they could tell you some horrible histories about me. And they would be true. If you are going to marry me, I don't want to lie to you. I'm a terrible girl."

*He crossed his arms, looking thoughtful for a moment*
"Everyone always says I'm too quiet, too careful or thoughtful. They say never take chances....which isn't right."
*he glanced at her*
"I bet there's things they say that aren't true about you."
