"I know how that feels. I used to live someplace pretty boring, myself. Sometimes I miss it though," he said, sounding a little sad.

"Family?" she asked him, not knowing any other reason why someone would miss boredom.

He shook his head. "Haven't got one. It was just... I was happy, living back there. I'd never known anything else, but once I got to... the real world, things changed. I changed. If I went back there, I wouldn't be as happy as I used to be."

"Sometimes change is good. ... Not all of the time, mind you, but sometimes."
Bringing up the word "family" reminded her of her friends and her parents and brothers back home. She knew she would really miss them soon. She reached up and clutched a small, oval locket that hung on a short chain around her neck.

He laughed darkly. "My change was without a doubt for the worse."

"How so?" she asked him, not exactly thrilled with his answer.

He waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, it's complicated. Besides, I'm not about to dump my life story on some stranger. Let's just say that I used to be an innocent, simple-minded idiot and now I'm older, wiser and more corrupt."

"Oh. ... Not a happy result."
It was getting colder. She shivered, still holding tight to her locket, but sitting up straighter once more.

He nodded. "You still seem pretty pure and innocent."
I really ought to find a way to fix that...

"And sheltered." she added, "I know I am, and I'm happy with it. There's a certain freedom that comes with that sort of ignorance. You can do whatever you know how to do and not feel any guilt." she smiled, knowing that she still had that "certain freedom".

Crowley actually snorted. "You mean you believe all of that 'ignorance is bliss' bullocks?" He took a ripe, red apple out of his coat pocket, tossed it up in the air and caught it.
"Trust me, kiddo, knowledge is power. If you think you're free now, wait until you see how liberating it is to walk through a world that you know and understand. Everything is suddenly colorful and interesting; the places you go, the people you meet, the things you see and feel." He studied the apple for a moment and offered it to Erin.
"Ignorance might be bliss, but there's nothing compared to the pure ecstasy of discovery."

Erin did not take the apple but said a quiet "no thank you".
"I will never understand the wold as most do, and the world will never understand me." she told him, "That's one thing I know for sure."

Crowley took a bite out of the apple and chewed it, savoring the taste. "How do you know? It doesn't sound to me like you've tried to learn about the world. I suppose you're right, though. You don't really understand. If you think ignorance makes you free, then you're going to be susceptible to being controlled by people who know more than you do. To know something is to be protected against something else."

"And to be plagued be images and memories that if you did not know about you would not be tortured by otherwise. Learning about the world is no problem for me in the sense of history. In fact, royal history has interested me the most." she paused, "But in another sense, I know there are evils out there, it's generally easy to sense something bad in someone. And then you make the choice of what to do. ... I know that on my own it would be harder. Pressures all around me that I've never had to put up with because I've always been content to be who I am." she stood up and took a few steps forward.
"There are a few things I know, there are many things that I don't. ... As for the world understanding me, they've never liked what the didn't understand, causing them to cast what ever it was or who ever it was out of sight. I've had a taste of that already."

Crowley rolled his eyes behind his sunglasses. "You seem to be completely missing the point. I'm not talking about knowing things about the world. I mean knowing how the world works. You can't get by purely on instinct, take it from somebody who's been around."
