"Until I'm old enough to go to University, like my dad." *He explained.* "But I'll be home every Christmas and Easter and all the summers." *He added earnestly.*

"...that's eight years from now!" *she said, frowning.* "And you'll be spending your holidays with your family...or going to Monte Carlo for the summer..."

*He frowned.*
"Nah, Dad doesn't like Monte very much. Besides, I'd rather spend a summer in our treecastle than in a stuffy hotel with lots of old ladies cooing over me an' Ellie."

"It's not ours," *pouted Sorcha.* "It's YOURS. Your boards. Your drapes. Your books." *she pushed a pile of books over angrily.*

*He looked hurt.*
"It wouldn't have happened without you, and you know it. It's no more mine than it is yours."

"It's on YOUR land! Or your father's, anyway." *she said tearfully.* "What does it matter if I helped? Me Da's worked at Manderley for years and he doesn't even own our cottage!" *she scowled and began to stomp over to the trap door, opening it and shoving down the rope ladder.*
"Some things never change."

"Wait!" *He called out, grabbing her wrist.* "Don't you see? We could change that!"

*She yanked her wrist from his grasp, her eyes snapping cold green fire.*
"How?"

*Okay, that look was scary as hell. He stammered, unsure of what to say. Everything he had been about to say had been pretty much scared out of him.*

"Exactly." *she spat, turning back to descend the rope ladder.*

**YEARS AND MUSCLES LATER**
*Liam climbed up the rope ladder which was, miraculously, still climbable (he guessed Sorcha had replaced it) and into the treecastle. It was so much smaller now...*
*He had to duck to get inside, and he looked around, almost wistfully.*

***NEW DAY***
*Sorcha sat cross-legged on a cushion she'd sewn herself, cradling her father's battered old guitar, which she barely managed to keep in tune, and strummed it gently, humming the tune for a moment before she began to sing.*
"I promise you nothing, I take only that which is free. I'd give you a life full of risk; and the whirlwind of joy that can be. Don't try to bind me, just love me without any greed. And I'll give you the world And my heart... And the air that I breathe..."
*She easily found the chords with her long, slim fingers.*
"Slip the jesses, my love. This hunter you own From the hood to the glove. When the circling and striking are done, and I land... Let me come back to your hand..."
*Her voice held the last note, strong and clear.*
"I have no illusions...to think that I know what will come..."
*She began the second verse.*

*He had heard the music long before he got to the treehouse, and wondered if it was Sorcha who was singing. If so, she had an absolutely lovely voice, and she could play the guitar extremely well. He climbed the rope silently and easily, stopping before he reached the top to listen. He had the distinct feeling she'd stop if she knew he was there. He stopped before his head was above the hole in the floor where the rope ladder led to.*

"I laugh at the concept of life As the simple result of the sum... I just want to hold you, and share with you All of this life.
With the stars in the darkness And love in the light. And it's dizzying height...
Slip the jesses, my love. This hunter you own from the hood to the glove. When the circling and striking are done, And I land-- Let me come back to your hand.
Let me come back to your hand. Let me come back to your hand..."
*She continued the strumming pattern her father had taught her, finishing the song with a picking flourish.*

*He would have clapped, except he was hanging precariously on a rope ladder. He was about to climb down and leave unnoticed, but a rung of the ladder snapped and he found himself holding himself up by one hand.*
"Shit." *He muttered.*
