"Mikey, I can't leave the place like this--the--they'll think I fed someone into the wringer!" *The baby woke a little and began making noises, so she shook rocked her gently.*

*He shushed Kathy.*
"Ye're in no condition to clean and ye know it. I can clean up, just as soon as you an'..." *He realised that he didn't know what his baby's name was.*

*Kathy looked down at the wrinkled little face for a long time before she looked up at Michael.*
"MaryAnn," *she said softly.*

"Christ, Michael, I'm already tired--how much worse could it get if I just took a minute to set things to rights, here?"

"Really?" *She seemed honestly curious, as though the thought hadn't occurred to her. An hour earlier she'd thought she'd split in half but seemed no worse the wear for now, aside from everything still hurting when she moved.*

"Kath, ye're tired an' I won' have ye cleanin' up when ye should be home." *He did feel mad, that she had had to go through this alone. Though he wouldn't have wanted to see a birth really, anyway.*

*Kathy stared at him for a moment before she felt the trembling exhaustion in her muscles and nodded weakly, giving in.*
"...alright," *she sighed.*

*He kissed her forehead and set things in order, using some of the linens she'd only partly soiled to wipe up whatever was on the floor. He set the linens on top of those which Mrs. de Winter had dirtied at Liam's birth. Once he was finished, he turned to Kathy.* "I can either get ye some clean clothes now or we could go back to the house."

"I can go now," *she said, getting to her feet and picking up her bundle of dirty clothes.* "It's not so very cold out..."
