*He caught sight of her veil and yanked on it, wondering why she wore it. He managed to get it down and look at her face for a split-second. He wasn't horrified or afraid, merely curious. And somewhat miffed she didn't have a nose for him to grab.* "Nose?" *He said, frowning. The whole foundation of his universe had been shaken--she didn't have a nose. There was nothing for him to grab.*
*Micaela leapt up, horrified that her son had broken the unspoken taboo (although she hadn't warned him not to and she took a lot of the blame for it). She grabbed him quickly, though she knew that she might startle him and the damage had been done for Pina anyway. She looked down at him sternly.* "Liam, we don't touch Pina's veil. No-no." *He squirmed and complained loudly:* "Mama! Down! Down down down!"
*Micaela turned to Pina, eyes apologetic but not pitying.* "I am so sorry; I had no idea he'd pull on the veil." *She frowned down at him.* "We don't grab at peoples' faces anyway, Lionel William."

*Pina jammed the veil back over her face and backed up.*
"I'm sorry!" *She mumbled an excuse before fleeing the room, mortified.*

*Micaela shushed Liam before rushing out into the hall after Pina, placing a hand on her shoulder.*
"Sweetie, this isn't your fault." *Liam was miffed for a few seconds but was soon back to yanking on his mother's nose. She batted his hand away gently and let him play with her necklace instead.* "He's a baby... they yank on things. If it's anyone's fault it's mine for not making sure he knew not to pull on your veil."

"Please, don't worry about it," *she mumbled, looking at the ground.*

*Micaela tilted her chin up gently so she could look her in the eyes.*
"I'm going to go put him down for his nap now, okay? I know it sucks to be fifteen. If you need someone to talk to, I'm always around." *She squeezed her shoulder affectionately before turning around and beginning the hike to the east wing.*

***NEW DAY***
*Sorcha a crept up to the house after dinner one evening, telling her mother she was going for a walk. A long one. She slipped into the library from the outside, through the French doors--they were never locked. Moving through the darkness with ease in the place she knew so well, she perused the titles on the shelf that called out to her to read them. Some she knew well, others not at all.
Keeping an ear out for the stentorian tread of Mrs. Danvers, Sorcha took a book on architecture and sat curled up in a window seat to read it.*

((Time for her to meet the mom. Mrs. Danvers is dead now, you know. She is set to die in the Plot of Doom, during Liam's infancy.))
*Micaela had known she'd be here. She came often, and had since she was a small child. She approached quietly.*
"Sorcha?" *She said, once she was standing by the window. Sorcha was just slightly silhouetted by the fading light.*

*Sorcha looked up, swallowing a gasp and snapping the book shut as she leapt to her feet.*
"Missus de Winter! I...I...I...I was...just..."

*Micaela chuckled a little and held out a hand to stay her.*
"No, it's fine. I've known since before Liam went off to school." *She smiled.* "You've grown since then... I don't think I've really seen much of you since you were a baby."

*Sorcha laughed a little, nervously.*
"Everyone seems amazed that I've not stayed as wee little Sorcha," *she said with a shrug.*

*She smiled softly.*
"Maybe it's a mum thing... I can't quite believe Liam's gotten so big. Mothers always want their children to stay small forever."
*He'd grown up so very fast...*

"Aye. The young master's a credit to ye," *she said quietly.* "He fits so well into his place in the world."

*She smiled, secretly glowing with pride on the inside.*
"He's a funny one. His sister's the one begging to see the world while he's happy to stay here. But everything's run so smoothly for him so far... something's bound to shake him up at some point. Nobody gets away from Manderley scot-free."

"I'll light a candle for him. And ye, Missus de Winter. Ye've been so good to me family."

*She smiled.*
"It was nothing. Anything for friends."
