*Micaela sat at her desk, writing a letter to her Grandmother and to her cousins.*
Dearest Nana--
Maxim and I have wonderful news. You're going to be a great-grandmother! I learned I was pregnant just about a week ago. How is the family? I feel like I've fallen out of contact. All my love to everyone.
Love,
Micaela
**BEFORE THE BALL SOMETIME**
*Soon after, she received a reply. But not in her Nana's handwriting. It came with a large package.*
Mic--
Your letter found Nana very ill. We read your letter aloud to her and she was overjoyed to hear it, as are we. We've sent the christening gown for you, as well as the jewelry you were bequeathed as the eldest granddaughter--Nana didn't make it through the night after your letter's arrival. We are deeply saddened, but there will be no funeral nor mourning period. In true Nana fashion, she requested that we celebrate her life with a proper Irish wake.
We all love you so very much--you can expect a large family turnout at your fancy home come Christening week. All our love to you and to your husband.
Your cousin,
Maureen
*Micaela felt the tears rushing to her eyes, and her hand went to her mouth. She opened the box and drew out the beautiful gown and matching bonnet. The lace had been netted by her grandmother's grandmother and her sisters, and the gown had been in the family as long as anyone could remember. It had the initials of every baby ever christened in it embroidered on the skirts. There were a lot of monograms on there.*
*Underneath were the family heirloom jewels which she had always been promised as eldest granddaughter--rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings, all historic and beautiful. All she could do was stare at them after she had neatly laid them out on top of her desk and on top of the gown, trying not to cry.*
