Mrs Danvers adjusted the late Rebecca's nightdress on the bed, making it look as though any moment its owner would return and slip it on.
She paused for a moment. Something caught in her throat. Then, with her usual steeliness, Mrs Danvers reminded herself that no-one as beautiful and strong as Rebecca could ever really die, and she left the room in its usual state of perpetual waiting for its mistress to return.
She picked up a tea tray on the way to Mr. de Winter's study and knocked softly on the door when she reached it.
"Your tea, Mr. de Winter."

*Maxim looked up from his newspaper, slightly startled. He hadn't been reading, really, his mind had been far away...*
"Ah, come in, Mrs. Danvers. Thank you."

"She's dead, Mrs. Danvers," *he said without looking up. He glanced out the window, as if he could feel someone watching him.*

"I will be leaving you in charge, of course."
