"Anne isn't like that!"

**SWEENEY**
"All I'm saying is, don't think that you know her so well."

"I remember when we were children. She was some years younger, and I grew up in her father's house. The other boys jousted, wrestled, did things of that nature, and I remember her coming to sit under the tree where I was reading, asking if I could read to her."
He smiled a little.
"It's strange. This was all literally centuries ago..."

He nodded. "I remember the day I first saw Lucy. She was watching the birds in the tree outside of her bedroom window. The moment I saw her I fell in love. I was determined to meet her, and one day I did. A little while later I asked for her hand." He almost smiled at the memory. It had been a wonderful time in his life.

"Just like that?" said Richard.
His expression darkened.
"Anne and I were always close, but frankly, we married to prevent each other from being used as bartering chips for strangers. She needed protection against my brother George. I needed her inheritance. It took us some time to... to fall in love."

A lot of good it did you, he thought, turning away.

"The thing is, things were incredibly awkward up until the wedding itself. She was 16 and had already been married once. Not by choice, mind you, but now widowed and considered damaged goods by most of the world."
His expression darkened.
"I understand he... used her."

He nodded. "My wife was used as well, except it was after we were married. It's actually why I am where I am today."

"He was killed a few weeks after my arm. She passed into the guardianship of my brother George, and while he certainly never exerted his power over her that way, he kept her out of sight. Locked in her room...
"He was married to her sister Isabelle, so her inheritance reverted to him, and he intended to keep it by having Anne shut away in a convent."

He nodded. "Judge Turpin had me sent away to a prison for a crime that I did not commit, and had his way with Lucy. She tried to kill herself and went mad, and then the Judge took my daughter Johanna."

Richard ignored him, feeling the need to vent and not wanting to bother with Sweeney's misery.
"Anne ran away. Nobody had a clue where she'd gone. By now, Edward was pressuring me to marry Anne so that at least half of the inheritance would be safe from George. So I went looking for her, and you'd hardly believe where I found her."
