Richard pulled back his sleeve to display the way his last two fingers bent crookedly against his half-folded palm and the long scar that cleaved deeply into his arm up to his elbow.

"I was lieutenant general in my brother's army."
He stretched out his right leg, which was longer than the left but also noticeably less bulky (though only by comparison). The axis of the knee bent oddly inward.
"This, though, was always there. Not always, I mean, but since I was a child. And this-"
He laid a hand on his right shoulder.

Sweeney thought he didn't see anything, but then he noticed that his shoulders were very uneven. "I see. Wait a minute, your brother's army? Are you royalty or something?"
