Richard thrived on consistency. He was never happier than when things continued to be exactly as he thought they ought to be, which is why being in the Dreaming when he wasn't actually dreaming gave him a powerful case of the wiggins.
He did not care for the way that the castle changed shape depending on the angle it was approached. He had little understanding for things like gryphons and hippogriffs asking him his business.
The reality was that the Dreaming had a way of making Richard seem terribly insignificant. And as he waited in Dream's great hall for what he assumed would be the last time, he felt grateful that it was.

*Dream appeared through a doorway that hadn't been there a moment before, and approached Richard. It had been nearly one hundred years since he'd last seen him, and was not too happy with the visit. Richard was one of the only people he knew gloomier than himself.*
"Greetings, Viceroy." *he said with a short bow.*

"Likewise, Dream King," said Richard, returning the bow.

"Would you care for something to eat, before we talk of what business brings you to my realm?"

"Tea?"
((Oh hell yes.))

*Morpheus nodded and suddenly the two of them were in a dining room of sorts.*
"Have a seat. Real tea, or the... substance you asked for at our last meeting?"
*A waiter in a turban appeared at the table.*
"Nothing for me, thank you Taramis."

Richard stared at Taramis, desperately trying to lay a finger on a species.

"And for you, sir?" *asked Taramis, turning to Richard.*

"Er, tea, please."

*Taramis nodded.*
"Very well, sir."
*He left the table to bring Richards tea. Dream rested his hands on the table.*
"You have been well, I hope," *he said, attempting polite small talk.*

"Not as well as one might hope for, but that's why I came to you. I am abdicating my position as Viceroy of Asphodel."

*Dream raised an eyebrow, surprised. He expected Richard to leave as much as he expected to leave his own post.*
*Tamaris brought a teapot, milk, sugar, lemon slices, a plate of biscuits, and a teacup on an elaborate platter.*
"Your tea, sir."
*Morpheus waited for his servant to put the platter down before speaking.*
"What bought about this decision?"

"It has put a severe strain on my relationship with Anne- so much so that I may lose her otherwise."
Richard began dumping an obscene amount of sugar into his tea.
"So, I came to ask you to supervise until a successor may be found- if I may presume to do so much."

*Dream massaged his forehead.*
"What would this entail? You know I have many responsibilities."

"To be completely honest, sir, very little. The strain arose from my boredom at having so little to do, and consequently I became rather too inwardly focused."
