"I didn't know what to do! You don't understand..."

"I don't understand? It's not a science! He's a baby! Half the time I have no idea what to do, but you don't see me leaving him for months at a time, do you?"

"I'm not actually supposed to be with you, Eponine."

"Oh, so you're 'not supposed to be with me,' and yet you come in here after 5 months, all angry about Marius!"

"You- I- I want to be with you..."

"Then why did you leave? You say you want to be with me. Fine. But then you disappear for 5 months, dreaming you'd come home to a wife and child expecting me to completely disregard the man whom I've loved since I was 15 offering to take care of me and my children!"

"I... I didn't realize how much you loved him."

*She opened her mouth to retort with something childish like 'of course I love him' but it stuck in her throat. And she thought. And then she turned a nasty shade of pale.*
"I think I need to sit down." *She said weakly, sitting haphazardly in a nearby chair.*

He came up to her and knelt at her side, putting a hand on hers.

"I d... I... " *She stammered.*
*She'd realized something. She had loved Marius. For a really, really long time. And he'd never loved her back, and she'd thrived on that. She'd thrived on making some sort of tragic heroine out of herself. She had loved him, yes, but only as long as he didn't love her back. Now that he finally loved her, she found herself unable to say she loved him back. Of course, she loved him the way a sister loves a brother, and she was eternally grateful to him for taking care of her daughter.*
*But she didn't love him. Not the way he deserved. She felt rather ill. Loving Marius had been such a part of being 'Ponine that she didn't know what to do with herself. Now that she didn't love him.*
*It wasn't normal. Not at all. It was like a hole had been blown in her middle.*

*Unbeknownst to her, there were tears just starting to slide down her cheeks.*
"I h.. I have to tell him." *She said blankly to herself.* "I have to tell him. And he's never been happy, never had the chance... and now he finally..." *She let out a tiny, shuddering sob.*

"That I... that I don't...." *She couldn't finish her sentence, only bring a hand to her useless mouth.*

"I'll go tend to the baby," he said slowly.
