*She blinked back her tears and wiped them with a sleeve before turning back to face him.*
"It wasn't your responsibility to care for us anyway--that was John's, and he was dead. You have to understand that I was happy. I was happy with you, and with Aimee, however little you were there. That's... that's why I wanted to be home so badly. I loved you both so much." *She said, her voice cracking a little.*

*Marius felt stricken by her use of the past tense, but he nodded numbly.*
"I understand, I think..."

"I barely understand it myself."
*She sighed a little, sitting down on the couch.*
"I was terrified that I'd never see you two again, but when I finally got home, I was terrified that you would think you'd both gone crazy, and then there was Alexei..." *She trailed off.* "I was scared that you'd hate me." *Her voice was suddenly small, and she hated herself for it--she sounded like the 17-year-old who had died on the barricades of a forgotten insurrection.*

*Renn returned several minutes after Eponine, (as she'd made a detour for art supplies) and froze upon seeing the scene in front of her. She blinked a couple times.*
"Um. Hey there. Don't mind me, I'll be in my room."
*With that, she hurried off, glancing behind her every few steps until the living room was out of sight.*

"I don't hate you, 'Ponine..."

"I've given you every reason to. Sometimes I'm not even sure if I don't hate myself."

"...Don't," *he said softly.*

*She sighed and looked at her hands, dry and rough.*

*Marius reached over and took her hands in his.*
"I know I've been...absent...but 'Ponine, I can take care of you. Of the--baby or babies or whoever there is..."
*His eyes pleaded with hers.*
"Please, just don't let me lose you again."

*She colored a little and smiled gently but sadly.*
"Well if a past-her-prime street urchin with two children is what you want, then you'll get her." *She said softly.*

*Marius pressed a soft kiss to her hands.*
"...she's all that's ever stood by me in the darkest days of my life. How could I not?"

*She blushed and laughed softly.*
"You make me sound like some kind of hero."

"Well I couldn't very well leave you alone. You'd have wasted away--I love you too much to have allowed that."

"You are my saviour, 'Ponine...and I'm only sorry I've never been able to save you."
