*Crane sent a letter to Sylvia:*
Do not attempt to steal Lecter's files yet. Try to stall your employer with mine.

*Sylvia read the note and bit her lip. Maybe this would be harder than she expected. But at least she had something to give Thatcher. Hopefully it would be enough. Her fingers traced the lettering in some desperate attempt to be close to him, even in his absence. She felt so vulnerable. All she could do was wait to hear from Thatcher. She sat on her bed, trying to remember to breathe.*

***AFTER THE MEETING***
*Sylvia returned in a somber fluster, going silently to her room. She began to pack, a few necessary items at least. She didn’t know how long she would be away and she wasn’t ready to move everything. Not that it would fit in a hotel room. Her mind was spinning. Vexed, she finally came to rest on the corner of the bed and started to cry quietly. Everything seemed so hopeless.*

*Virginia was passing through the hall with a stack of books as she heard the sound of soft sobbing from somewhere nearby. Frowning, she noted the door to Sylvia's room was ajar and cautiously nudged it open with her hip. Seeing her normally strong friend in a flood of tears caused her to drop her books with a clatter careless of damage as she ran to Sylvia and knelt beside her.*
"Sylvia, dear! What's wrong? Are you ill? Did someone hurt you? What's happened?"

*Sylvia was startled by Virginia’s entrance. She looked up quickly, angrily rubbing the tears from her red eyes. She shook her head quickly, trying to brush it off. She swallowed hard.*
“Oh, Virginia…I didn’t mean to disturb you. Please don’t look at me. I must be a mess.”
*She stood quickly and turned away, hiding her face in the wardrobe as she pretended to be looking for something.*

*Virginia's brow furrowed and she gently caught hold of Sylvia's shoulders and turned her about to look her in the eye, placing her hands on either side of Sylvia's face, holding her gaze steadily.*
"Don't. Don't pretend as if nothing's the matter."

*Sylvia fought meeting Virginia’s eyes, instead search frantically anywhere else. Her lips trembled as she tried desperately not to cry again.*
“I…I can’t Virginia…it’s all too horrible.”
*She sighed softly in resignation.*
“I have to leave.”

"W-what? No!"
*Virginia slipped her arms about Sylvia and hugged her tightly.*
"You...you can't! I...I know it's selfish and horrible of me, but...I'm not ready! I'm not ready to be alone here! You can't just..."
*she shook her head, running out of breath and pausing to draw back and shake Sylvia slightly.*
"You can't!"

*Sylvia held her tightly, as desperate to hold her as she was to be held. After a moment she pulled away, brushing the hair back from Virginia’s face. She had calmed a bit and tried to smile.*
“It’s for the best. And besides, I’ll still come see you. I’ll stay your tutor. I just can’t be here. For many reasons.”

"But what if something happens to you? It's safe here--you told me this was a safe place for anyone!" *Virginia took Sylvia's hands and held them tightly.*

*Sylvia’s expression softened as she looked Virginia in the eye.*
“Oh, sweet Virginia…it is. It is a safe place. That’s why I have to go. I have to keep it safe. For you.”
*She lead them back to the bed and sat.*
“I promise this is for the best.”
*She smiled gently.*
“And it’s not all bad. I…have met someone. Someone who is dear to me.”

*Virginia smiled, then, even chuckling a little, ashamed of her outburst.*
"Oh! Forgive me, I thought..." *she shook her head.* "You are to be married, then? Congratulations."

“Put not the cart before the horse, but…”
*Sylvia smiled gently.*
“He is a good man.”
*She looked intently to Virginia.*
“It is important that I do this, not only for him, for us, but for you Virginia, and all the women here. If things play out poorly, I will not have you in its wake.”
*She stroked Virginia’s cheek softly.*

*Virginia's look softened with concern.*
"There is still something you are not telling me...why won't you tell me this danger? Perhaps I can help."
*She reached out and brushed a strand of hair back from Sylvia's brow.*
"Do you trust me?"

*Sylvia’s expression grew sadder, even as she held on to her smile.*
“Of course I trust you, Virginia. You have made me see things; things I never thought were possible. I will always be grateful to you for that. But this…”
*Her gaze dropped.*
“There are things that it is dangerous to know. I will not risk hurting you. Please except this and my most humble apology for it. I could never live with myself if something happened to you.”
