*Sylvia could hardly suppress a delicate laugh and smiled at both of them warmly.*
“No, sweet Jamie. If you have an interest in the profession and are capable of handling yourself as a lady, I would be happy to introduce you. But such things are not required here. If you are looking for a place to stay, this house is a safe haven for all unattached young women.”

"I TOLD you!" *Emily snapped at Jamie.*

Jamie shrugged. "I can be wrong."
She smiled at Sylvia.
"I might be interested. It's a hell of a lot better than being Daddy's little rich girl."

*Emily punched Jamie in the shoulder.*
"No. Way. You're not gonna--are you?"

*Sylvia nodded gently to Jamie.*
“If one can find the pleasure in it, it can be very rewarding. I would happily discuss it with you at length if you wish, with no obligation.”
*She turned back to Emily.*
“Madame has agreed to let you work in the kitchen in return for food and board if that is your pleasure. Her only request is that you are a proper lady around those that are in the house and that you not talk at length with the patrons. You don’t want them to get the wrong idea after all, only to find you unavailable.”

*snorts, again.* "I'm not going to talk to them about sex," *she said dryly.*

Jamie studied Sylvia, taking the girl in, slowly examining her.
"I'd be interested," she said quietly. "Tell me what the rules are."

*Sylvia’s lashes fluttered slightly.*
“I think that you will find that you do not need to speak of it for it to be on their minds. The request is for your own protection, and for the reputation of this house.”
*She sighed lightly.*
The tea will get cold. I’ll have to bring more.
“Perhaps we should discuss such things further away from prying eyes and ears.”
*Sylvia gestured to the door to the hallway that connects the other rooms of the house.*

"So I say "hi" and they hump my leg? Seriously." *Emily looked a bit cross as she went with Sylvia and Jamie to another room.* "I can't even talk to people? Honestly--I can make myself unattractive enough to have a simple chit-chat with someone from the outside world."

That’s what I’m afraid of.
“Emily, it’s just that when men visit here, they tend to be looking for pleasurable company. Even if you do not intend it, it is likely they will assume.”

"Can't they have company without sex? Friends?" *Emily frowned.* "Honestly, what is WRONG with you people? They don't need a quickie, they need intellectual stimulation!"

Jamie grinned.
"Em, they need both. But men are men, they need sex first, then talk."

"Men are MORONS!" *she snapped.* "Neanderthals! We're not helping them move forward by--enabling them!"

*Sylvia looked sad for Emily, biting her lip gently.*
“Jamie’s correct. Even if they seek conversation beforehand, the acts are rarely without each other. It is a principle that this house was founded on. There are no loose skirts here, no floosies. Only educated women that entertain men because they choose too, and only when they do so. Women that value there ability to arouse men’s minds as well as their flesh. But I am not unsympathetic. There are many places in the city where such desires for pure conversation and friendship might be found, but here is not one of them. I understand if that makes you uncomfortable, but there is nothing I can do. I do not set the rules here.”
*Her gaze fell. Then she lightened slightly, looking back to Emily.*
“You can entertain company here in the privacy of your own room, even if it is not for pleasures of the flesh. But you will have to meet them elsewhere initially.”

"I KNOW she's right! That doesn't MAKE it right. Why not try and change the way things are?" *she chewed viciously on her lower lip.*
