*Anne rested her head on his shoulder with a sigh.*
"We need to find you a hobby or something."

"I'm still working on the book!" Richard said suddenly, in the brightest tone he'd used in weeks. "I'm on volume 26 now..."

*Anne laughed.*
"That's marvellous."

"So, I'm almost at the point where Mercedes realizes that the baby she is carrying is in fact the Earl of Northam's, while she has previously believed it to be the product of Jeremy the stable-boy. Is that a fortuitous turn of events?"
((The title of the book is "Mercedes, or: The Sham Thru-Seen", and he's been writing it since 1767. It is his pride and joy- so much that when a mortal family he grew involved him made him a baby girl's godfather, he insisted that her middle name be Mercedes. Beatrice Mercedes Carlyle, who prefers calling herself Sadie, is the protagonist of my book-in-progress.))

"Oh thank heaven. Jeremy was so rough and ill-mannered. Even if he looks like a Greek god."

"Reminds me of Edward, in retrospect."

"Don't think about him, sweetheart. You'll only upset yourself."

"I think Jeremy shall die in a riding accident," Richard said placidly, with a small nod. "It shall not improve Mercedes' fortunes, but I owe it to the reader, I think."

"Mercedes...he corners Mercedes in the stables on a dark night, desperate to know whose child she carries. To escape from his rage upon hearing the truth, she mounts a half-wild stallion and disappears along a winding path into the storm-tossed woods. Jeremy follows, of course, and then a lightning strike causes both horses to rear, throwing them to the ground, killing Jeremy and placing Mercedes at death's door..."

"But the child-"

"Will live...but perhaps its face is horribly deformed...or its mind twisted, warped, somehow..." *Anne bit her lip.* "It's frightfully exciting."

"Deformed?" Richard recoiled slightly. "You DO mean facially, correct?"
He glanced at his own crippled hand and knee.

*Anne shrugged.*
"Whichever you prefer."
*She smirked and stood up, moving to his chair and sitting on his lap to give him a hug.*
"I don't mind."

"Facially, yes," he said shortly, putting his arms around her. "Much more dramatic. It would have to wear a mask of some sort, I suppose."

*Anne grinned.*
"Admit it--you like Erik more than you let on."
