*Rochester rolled his eyes and grinned.*
"Anyone that I consider my friend should know that I do not keep common company. Everyone that I indulge is exceptional in at least a few ways."
*He rakishly kissed her hand.*
"Some of them even more so."

*Shadi grinned. She didn't know why he sought her out, but she wouldn't complain. There must be hundreds of fascinating people he could be with, any time of the day, and here he was with her.
That made her feel important. More than Nadir ever had, even... even when they'd wed. How silly she'd been to think marriage was the only way to experience life. What a child.*
"I'm so glad I met you," *she said guilelessly. She reached out without shame to touch him wherever she could, to learn his shape and how it all worked. She was fascinated.*

*Rochester grinned and shivered beneath her touch. He traced his kisses over throat and his words came breathy, his interest starting to stir once more.*
"Oh Shadi...and I you....and I you..."
*He urged his fingers over her skin, wondering idly if they where going to get back to the party at all. Not that he minded, of course.*

*Shadi was delighted by the effect she had on him. It was power, of a sort--but not the kind she felt inclined to wield over him. It was just so interesting, how he moved and breathed and fluttered his eyelids when she did this or that. Now she knew, a little, what men paid women in the streets for--if not why anyone would require payment for it. Everything he showed her was so delightful.*
"I see," *she said.* "You do seem somewhat grateful."

*Rochester rolled his eyes playfully.*
"Well, darling...that's not exactly gratitude, but I guess it's close enough."
*He nuzzled warm kisses on her neck, urging his body against hers.*
"It's just so terribly hard for me not to want you when you are so...near."

*Shadi felt a flood of feeling for him, and something else, at his words. Why was her father trying to keep them from this? It harmed no one; on the contrary.*
"I'm glad. I'd hate to be..." *She yawned hugely.* "alone in that."
*She nestled against him, her movements lazy until they stopped altogether, and she was asleep, her head on his shoulder.*
((Aww...))

((Teh cuteness! ftw.))
*Rochester just smiled and shook his head, passing the time stroking her hair as she slept.*
What is it about her that I can't resist? Sometimes I daren't trust myself with her.

((I thought I'd give him the opportunity to feel unaccountably tender.))
*Shadi shifted in her sleep, her arm wrapping around his torso as she dreamed of her life before Rochester, before Nadir, before the Doctor. The streets.
She'd had this one before. It found her in a dark alley, a gruesome caricature of a man looming over her, grinning as he removed the rags from her body with one tug.
So you're not a boy. Just as well.
She did not scream. She knew what he wanted, and that the screaming would only season his pleasure. Her knife, hidden in a boot, flashed once, twice, and she was free, if covered in blood. At least it was not her own. But unlike the true memory her dream had grasped as its template, she could not run, and he kept coming after her, always laughing, always grinning, always just one step behind her--
She gasped and came awake sharply, ducking away from Rochester's hands in her sleep-addled confusion. When she recalled where she was, she blushed.*
"I'm sorry," *she said, confused by the mix of feelings within her. She flung herself on him again.* "I"m sorry, Rochester," *she mumbled into his shirtfront.*

((Yea, I appreciate it. She seems to be in his thoughts a lot at the moment. Even elsewhere.))
*Rochester looked quite surprised by her waking. He embraced her comfortingly.*
"Shh...it's all right, Shadi. I'm here. I promise. I won't let anything hurt you."
*After a moment, he lowered his face to examine hers.*
"Are you all right? Do you want to talk about it?"

*Shadi shivered once, then looked up at him, a brave smile painting her features.*
"Of course. I'm fine. Just a... just a bad dream."

*Rochester's brow furrowed.*
"It might make you feel better to share it with me. I promise not to judge."

*Her brow furrowed.*
"I don't know. I think... I think you might think badly of me. If I tell you."
*She did not normally curb her confessions, but she remembered his face when she'd told him about her skill with a knife, and she didn't want to see that look again. Of all people, she wanted him to think well of her.*

*Rochester pursed his lips and traced a finger along her hairline, tucking a stray lock behind her ear. His eyes searched hers imploringly.*
"Shadi...don't you trust me? I would never think badly of you. Especially not for a bad dream. I promise."

"But one time, when I said something about knives, you had this look... I didn't like how you looked at me. I mean, I didn't like making you think bad things about me. And I think... I think this is something you'd call bad."
*She looked down, plucking at the edges of her disarrayed gown. Why was she ashamed of this? Because it was Rochester? Because she actually cared what he thought? That fact irritated her, a little. She'd never held back before. She wouldn't now.*
"I have the dream a lot, because it really happened. I was a kid, and this man--a big man--chased me into an ally. I thought I could get out the other end but it was blocked, and he... he ripped off my clothes and said he was glad I was a girl because I was wearing boys clothes you know and so I took out my knife and I slashed him a bunch, really deep, and ran away and I don't know if I killed him or not but I didn't really care and I still don't and I think you don't like that very much about me."

*Rochester looked at her sympathetically for a moment before pulling her tightly against him. For several breaths, he held her close, just trying to comfort her, to silently tell her everything would be all right. Then he leaned back to look at her, his eyes soft.*
"Shadi...what you have gone through...what you had to deal with...I am truly sorry for. But that would never make me think less of you. You are far too precious a gift."
*He pulled her back to his chest, stroking her hair.*
