It was all Christian could do to keep himself from bursting into laughter.

"You helped more than I can say." Anastasia told the nurses and the doctor.
She turned to Christian with a lopsided grin on her face.
"Well. That took care of that."

"I don't believe it," he finally burst. "Is he really gone? Did you see the look on his face?"

"God, it was amazing. I didn't think he would ever leave us alone."
In the back of her head, her inner voice was telling her that wasn't the last she'd see him.

"You were amazing! Never knew it was humanly possible for anyone to reach so high a note," he teased. He tried to imitate her scream.

She started giggling.
"Well, I am a singer..."

"Super soprano, I should say?" he grinned.

Laughing, she sat next to him.
"Maybe not like those opera singers, but in a pinch, I got good pitch."

The nurses and the doctor took one final cautionary look around the room and took their leave, bidding the two a good evening. They'd put more nurses and staff members on duty, the doctor informed them, just to play it safe. The door thumped shut behind them.
"Remind me why you're not an opera singer again?" Christian asked, once they'd gone.

"Princesses don't sing opera. That, and I had my ballet lessons and learning the piano."

"Of course, princesses can sing opera! Princesses can do anything!" he laughed. There was a slight pause before he muttered, "Wow...you're a princess," only then seeming to register the weight of her title. "And I'm just...a penniless writer."

"Oh, Christian..." She sighed.
"I don't care if you have a title or not. You're more than I could have hoped for."

"You must forgive me my disbelief, princess," he replied with a tight smile, playing on her respective royal title as a term of endearment. "I've never been much good at maintaining relationships with persons of...elevated status."

"I'm princess in name only these days. A new regime took over my country and installed a different government."
She swallowed hard, remembering her family.
"And what remains of the royal family is me."

"Not to me," he argued, taking her hand in his own. "Since the moment I've met you, I've thought you were royalty embodied. I'm a lucky man."
His features quickly took on a harder aspect.
"So, there's no one left that you knew? You're all alone?"
