*Rochester felt himself blush, which was odd and quickly cleared his throat and ruffled his cravat as if he had no idea what Kris was talking about.*
"I...well...perhaps this was a terrible idea. At least, very dangerous for me."
*He couldn't hide his grin.*

*Dorian approached the group with a smile.*
"He does. It's quite irritating, actually." *He gave Shadi a polite bow.* "It's wonderful to see you again, Miss Shadi."

*Shadi curtsied as best she knew how.*
"You too, Mr. Gray. It's so nice of all of you to come and meet me. I've been so curious about Rochester's friends."

*Alex arrived late, accompanied by Lizzie and throwing a few meaningful glances at Rochester and company to indicate that she was not "she" tonight.*
"May I present Miss Elizabeth Quinn? Lizzie, this is Rochester, Dorian, Shadi and Kris. She's a visitor," *Alex told them.* "From Texas."

*Lizzie blushed horribly, but she managed to curtsy.*
"Nice to meet ya'll. Thank 'ya fer yer hospitality, sir."
*She sucked her lip and looked to Alex. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.*

*Rochester bowed to her and kissed her hand.*
"Charmed, I'm sure. Any friend of Alex's is always welcome in my home."

*Alex glanced at Lizzie, hoping she was going to be all right. Perhaps it had been a mistake, to expose her to the sort of thing that commonly happened in Rochester's house. But then, it was in honor of his little Shadi, so it should be... safe enough.*
"See?" *she asked Lizzie gently.* "No trouble. Shall I get you some punch?"

*Shadi turned eagerly to Rochester.*
"Did Mlle. Renn finish the painting yet? Oh Rochester, you have no idea... I saw it when she wasn't done, but I looked beautiful."

*Lizzie smiled and nodded.*
"That sounds just fine. If 'ya don't mind, I'll join 'ya."
*She wasn't sure she was ready to handle the situation unattended.*

*Rochester grinned and nodded.*
"You always do. I'd be happy to show you...if you all will excuse us for a moment."
*He looked to the others.*
"I promise to have her back down in time for dinner."

*Shadi blushed, wondering if they were thinking... things about her and Rochester. Wondering whether it mattered. She liked those things, after all. She followed after him.*

*Rochester offered his arm and lead her upstairs to a large bedroom. It was his private one, the one he retired to when the girls wanted some time alone. It had a fireplace and a four-poster bed. Above the mantle was the painting of Shadi in a gilded frame. He glanced at her with a warm smile.*
"I hope you like it as much as I do."

"Of course. Always."
*Alex led Lizzie to the refreshments, nodding at the other guests.*
"You see? There's nothing to worry about; Rochester always keeps a most civil household. It's in honor of his little protege, Shadi Khan; whom he's teaching manners."

*Lizzie's jaw set to one side. If this fella taught manners, she'd stick out like a sore thumb. She tried to dredge up everything that she'd had to learned about being proper in the last few years.*
"I'll try not to disappoint 'ya, Mister. I just...this ain't the sort of party I'm accustomed to."

*Shadi's eyes grew wide.*
"Oh, Rochester, it's magnificent!" *she breathed.* "I can't believe you got such a nice frame for it. I look so... so..."
*She didn't have words for it. It made her see herself in a way she couldn't ever have imagined, growing up. She glanced around the room, as if the portrait was too much to stare at for long periods of time.*
"Is this... your bedroom?"
