Valmont accepted the drink but merely held it, figuring Rochester was far enough gone for the both of them. Such a shame, too. No fun like this.
He sat casually on a love seat, his ankle crossed on his knee.
"Tell me all about it," he drawled.

*Rochester shook his head, eyes empty as he sank to the couch.*
"I don't know..." *His words were distant, as if he couldn't make sense of the thing.*
"There...it wasn't any sort of fight. Just...gone."
*His shoulders sank in sadness at the admonition.*

Well. That was downright boring, Valmont thought. He really sort of didn't care, but felt obligated to dig deeper, should there be someone of interest down there.
"And this was how long ago?"

*Rochester's brow lowered in thought, as if something was just out of reach.*
"I...I'm not sure."
*He shrugged it off suddenly, a quirk of a smile twisted his lips.*
"But enough about me...however have you been, darling?"

He was pretty far gone, and Valmont was somewhat disgusted by him. At the same time, there was sort of a duty he felt to let the man loose on Paris again. There was competition, certainly, but there were plenty to go 'round, and Valmont enjoyed the fact that there was more than one fox attempting to raid the various hen houses.
"Oh, quite the usual," he said casually, pursing his lips with a little pride. "Though I've recently had the pleasure of some most unusual rendezvous. But Rochester, old man, you simply must get out of here. No one has seen you in an age, and people are starting to talk."

*Rochester blinked slowly, but then resolution seemed to set in his expression. He nodded slowly and stood, his wrinkled shirt translucent in the dim firelight.*
"Just the thing." *He nodded again and paused, as if in expectancy.*

"And I know exactly where we'll go," Valmont said with satisfaction. "To ease you back in slowly, and delight you at the same time."
He raked his eyes over Rochester, appraising him. "You will absolutely have to change, however."

*Rochester stared at Valmont for a moment, then at his garments. His eyes growing glassy again, he started towards the stairs without another word on the subject to try to find something to wear.*

Valmont lounged gracefully against various pieces of furniture as he waited. If Rochester took longer than ten minutes he was going up after him. Or rather, sending someone.

*It was strange. When Rochester made his way back down the stairs, he looked almost like a different person. A functioning one at that. His clothes were clean and pressed, and even matched. He looked...well, smashing. He plucked casually at the frill of his sleeve as he put on his jacket and picked his cane up.*
"So where is the delicious place you had in mind?" *He purred familiarly.*

One corner of Valmont's mouth curled into a smile. This was much, much better. Rochester looked normal, which was to say, Valmont could permit him to leave the house in his company. If this Rochester had been merely hiding in the wreck which had disappeared up the stairs, Valmont failed to see the point in his mission of mercy.
"You are, it seems, no stranger to slumming it," he said. "So you cannot object when I take you to the most appalling carnival outside of town. Quite third-rate, except for this fellow; Gwynplaine. Will cheer you up in no time."

*Rochester waved a hand dismissively.*
"Now darling, you don't have to justify it to me." *For really, he'd already half-admitted to being there before so what good was the healthy dose of insult? Rochester just gave a superfluous gesture to the door.*
"Lead on."

Valmont hadn't really intended to insult him directly; it was just his way. "Excellent, dear fellow," he said. "You won't regret it."

"How could I regret any outing with you?" *Rochester poked with a grin, brows bouncing as he glanced from Valmont to the door.*
((To the carnival?))
