"I can't imagine how you keep your hands off her," *Alex sighed.* "Though I suppose her new father presents a barrier. It's funny; I'd swear I saw the two flirting at one point--ah well, nevermind. I don't suppose I have anything to teach the girl?"

*Rochester smiled wickedly.*
“The two of whom? Nadir and that blonde stud of his?”
*He sipped his wine in thought.*
“If you wanted to attend a meeting at some point, I’m sure we could come up with something for you to teach. If you are interested.”

*Alex grinned.*
"Well, them, too."
*She contemplated the possibilities.*
"Perhaps," *she said slowly.* "I seem to excell at drinking and falsehood."

*Rochester grinned.*
“Anything else I might sell to Monsieur Khan? I’m not sure that is quite what he was looking for.”
*His brow rose.*
“So…who else did you mean? Other than the blonde?”

*Alex shook her head ruefully.*
"Other than singing trouser roles? No."
*She bit her lip now, wondering whether she should say it.*
"I don't know. It was just a feeling. I passed by the kitchen one night--the one at the Opera--and saw them talking. I didn't know they were related, of course, because they must have only just found out. But it seemed... well, I had the feeling they were... involved. Otherwise, I'd have bothered them for a snack."
*She shook her head again.*
"Obviously I was mistaken. Assumptions, and all that. No matter."

*Rochester grinned mercilessly.*
“You do skirt the issue well don’t you? Whom do you mean?”

*Alex opened her mouth to protest.*
"I'm not--Oh. I suppose I am. I'm sorry; I meant Shadi and Nadir."
*Her eyes darted to the side, shiftily.*
"I know it's ridiculous. Of course I realized my mistake later. When practically everyone heard him call her out at our party."

*Rochester’s grin melted and he was very quiet. He stared off into space for a moment. Collecting himself, he looked back to Alex, but his voice lacked its normal levity.*
“I’m sorry…I just…I never assumed you would mean…really?”
*He looked very troubled.*

*Alex frowned, instantly regretting her ill-considered confession.*
"No, of course not! I mean, not really! Of course I was wrong, Rochester; I'm only saying, without knowing the blood tie, I interpreted it wrong. A reunion only, perhaps."
*A Rochester without that smile in his voice was not something Alex enjoyed seeing. She felt as though she'd asked the sun to hide its face.*

*Rochester tried to recover, finding a whimsical half grin.*
“Easy enough to happen to anyone…But tell me Alex, why did you come visit me? Am I truly so simply irresistible?”

((Wait... I'm supposed to have a reason?))
*She wasn't convinced Rochester had believed her, but she didn't know what to think either. His worry confused her again; she had expected him to laugh it off.*
"Do I need a reason to visit, Rochester? Other than to impose on your finely laden table, of course."
*Alex shrugged.*
"No rehearsals today, and nothing terribly exciting at the Opera. Usually such a hub of, forgive the expression, drama. I imagine something terribly interesting is happening as we speak, and I'm missing it. No, I just wanted to see if you'd settled in. I hadn't seen you since the party; I got to wondering what you were up to. Or who."

*Rochester shifted into his more common demeanor smiling warmly and sipping his wine. He looked up to Alex with a raised brow.*
“Well then…I certainly don’t mind you coming for any reason. You are always most welcome. And if my home can be a safe haven from the Opera, all the better. It makes it more likely that you will be ever so grateful, and I won’t mind that all.”
*He smiled wickedly.*
“I will always be glad to have you at my table or anywhere else you would so desire.”
*He paused a moment before adding.*
“Although, to be honest…my dining room wasn’t the room I expected you to have the most interest in. That is to say…if you are still amiable. Perhaps for dessert?”
*His brow arched suggestively and his dimple bore deeply into his cheek.*

*Alex smiled slyly.*
"I suppose I could be made to admit to ulterior motives, if pressed. In just the right way. But Rochester, surely you don't mean to say that the dining room has never afforded you any non-gastronomical entertainment?"
*She rose quickly, only to settle herself on the edge of the table, next to where he sat.*
"Would you be happy to have me on your table, as well?"
FADE OUT

***FADE IN***
*Rochester looked a bit flushed, but very content. His dimple deepened as he looked to Alex.*
“Well then…you are welcome to dinner anytime.”
*His brow bounced suggestively. Then his expression grew curious.*
“But aren’t you still…looking for fairer meals? I do hope I haven’t spoiled your appetite.”

*Alex's mouth quirked in a wry grin, marred by her aura of satisfaction.*
"Not at all, my dear. But I fear, free meals are few and far between; perhaps I have learned adaptation."
*She waved a lazy hand.*
"Besides, the discrepancy doesn't extend to others of your sex, so I am not terribly worried."
