"You're welcome."
*He smiled as he studied the distance between them and the tree*
"Oh, I don't know. With a fair start I could out-run you."

"You wish you could," *she scoffed.*
"Ready? Set. GO!"

*At 'go', he was off, throwing a "come get me" grin over his shoulder*

*Becca answered the challenge in his gaze with a toss of her head as she spurred her horse into motion, catching up to him quickly in a fluid gallop, and drawing close enough to slap his horse on the rump.*
"Poor beast has such a load to carry!" *she called, laughing.*

*Rudolf rolled his eyes and gave her "ha-ha, very funny" look*
"I'll apologize to him later!"
*They were almost to the tree, and were still neck and neck*

*Becca got herself on the inside, nearer the tree, getting the crucial edge as she rounded the tree in a hairpin turn.*

*She was good--an excellent horsewoman, taught well. But he was no slouch, either. Though the turn gave her a lead once more, Rudolf used the varying terrain to inch back up again and gain on her*

*Becca looked back and yelped as he drew nearer.*
"Come on! Yah! Yah!" *she urged her horse with a wild war-whoop.*

*They were almost there. Just a few more feet and--
He went head over heels as his horse stumbled in a pothole camouflaged by grass. Thrown, he went sailing over the horse's head and was sent sprawling on the ground. Luckily, he fell far enough away that the horse didn't land on him.
He still, not quite sure what hurt and not wanting to move anything.*

*Becca glanced back and saw the riderless horse silouhetted against the sky and pulled hard on the reins, glancing about in terror until she saw Rudolf's body lying motionless on the ground.*
"RUDOLF!" *she shrieked, throwing herself from the saddle and running to where he lay.*
"Speak to me, Rudolf--say something!" *she blurted, panicking. She hesitantly touched his face, his arms, his shoulders.* "Where does it hurt?"

*There was a low moan of pain as he shifted a bit. Slowly, he turned his head to meet her eyes*
"Everything hurts. But...my knee is the worse."
*He tried to sit up, making it only partway. He eyed the knee in question. It didn't LOOK bad, but it felt as though it was broken.
Perhaps it was*

"...wait here."
*Becca ran to the woods and found a fallen maple branch. Taking a knife from her pocket, she trimmed it and split off several sturdy slats. Returning to Rudolf, she untucked her shirt and cut strips of material from the bottom.*
"...try to relax."
*She took hold of his leg and pulled it straight with a quick jerk. She heard a slight pop and thought she might be sick. Closing her eyes for a moment, she laid the wood strips along his leg, then bound them together tightly with the cloths, holding it straight.*
"Now do you think you could walk or re-mount, with my help?" *she asked.*

*He flinched hard when she popped his knee, involuntarily crying out in pain from it. He took a deep breath, keeping calm as she bound the injury as best as could be done out in the field.*
"I think I could, with help. Gah...this hurts worse than I thought it would."

*Slowly, Becca helped him to stand. Luckily, she was much stronger than she looked, and tall enough to offer him comfortable and sturdy support as they hobbled slowly back towards the house. Becca held the reins of the horses in the other hand, and they allowed themselves to be led along easily.*
"Are you certain you wouldn't rather ride?"

*Most of his concentration was both on keeping off his injured leg as much as possible but also not putting all of his weight on her and squishing her (or knocking them both over).*
"I could, I guess...if you can get me onto the horse."
