*Becca followed the tall stranger who had saved her into the fine house.*

*Philippe rang for a servant who swiftly came.*
"Brigitte will find you something to wear so that you can make yourself presentable. I will be in my study. "
*He glanced around.*
"And do be quiet."

*She looked puzzled, but nodded, following the maidservent, who outfitted her with plain but sturdy undergarments and a dark blue gown with a square neckline edged in fine lace and waves of heavy fabric drawn over the bustle behind. Her hair was brushed back into a ladylike coil that her mother never would have allowed--it made her look quite grown up, she thought. The overall effect of wearing another, older woman's clothes made Rebecca boggle slightly at the sight of herself, having been used to pinned-up braids and straight, ankle-length skirts. Feeling awkward but somehow deliciously confident, she followed the directions to the gentleman's study and knocked quietly on the door.*

*Philippe opened the door and glanced at the girl.*
"Good, I see you look healthier."
*He turned back round, completely oblivious to her changed appearance.*
"I will send for the carriage to take you home."

*She dropped a short curtsy.*
"Thank you, Monsieur." *She turned to go, but stopped with her hand resting upon the door frame, looking back over her shoulder for a moment.* "Would you be so good as to tell me to whom I am so indebted?"

"Philippe De Chagny."
*He dropped the Comte, there was no need to shock the poor girl. He thought quickly.*
"But, I would perhaps not mention your name to your mother."

((I'll assume you meant his name.))
*She looked at him shrewdly.*
"I see no call to mention any of this to my mother," *she said carefully.* "Good day, Monsieur." *She left, making her way towards the foyer.*

*Upon finishing her letter-writing, the Comtess swept into the hall only to startle a young and obviously well-bred girl who was wearing a gown she dimly recalled seeing on Georgiana several years earlier.*
"And WHO might you be?" *she said coolly.*

"Rebecca Blakeney, madame," *she said with a polite curtsy and equal reserve and composure, which she had in spades from both of her parents. On the one hand, she held her hot blood tightly in check, influenced in this by her father's equal predicament in masking his tempers and passions, and on the other hand she possessed a remarkable dose of sang-froid from her mother, which tended to balance things, somewhat.*

"And do you care to explain your presence in this house and my daughter's cast-offs?" *she retorted.*

"I met with a mishap and was kindly offered these clothes on loan, as my own were quite ruined. They shall be returned to you as soon as possible."

Blakeney...
*The name seemed familiar to her. In a moment, the Comtess recalled the flashes of conversation in years past of the man they called the richest in England. Her manner warmed considerably in a matter of moments, though it remained brusque as always.*
"Do not believe me so mean as to grudge you a dress, mademoiselle. --As a matter of fact, I've just had a marvellous idea. Won't you come with me to the parlour?"
*She sent a servant to fetch Georgiana as she urged Mademoiselle Blakeney to take a seat.*

"You are too kind, Madame," *said Rebecca politely, seating herself with her hands folded demurely in her lap, her ankles crossed precisely. Her mother had drilled her well, and no one would guess she could ride astride or fence or fire a pistol as well as her brothers.*

*Héloïse regarded her carefully.*
"Your last name seems...English--am I correct, Mademoiselle?"

"Yes. My father is British, while my mother is French. I am fluent in each of their mother tongues, and know some Italian besides."
