*The paper one morning included a small notice:*
Madame Belladonna Enjolras and her children were involved in an accident just outside of Paris late last night. On the way home from the Jevargne estate, the carriage struck an ice patch and spun off the road, flipping over and killing the Enjolras heir, Nicholas, instantly. Madame Enjolras was critically injured- however, she is now listed as stable, though comatose. Adrienne Enjolras was thrown clear of the accident and is said to be in good condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

One morning, a headline:
Large black jungle cat spotted early this morning roaming the streets. Gendarmes beg citizens not to panic. But maybe to carry a big stick.

Another announcement...
The noted criminal Jack Sparrow has escaped police custody, along with a female accomplice who answers to the name "Johanna". He is described as a dirty, loping man in his early thirties, while she has blond hair and appears to be in her late teens. During the escape, 'Johanna' shot and wounded several police officers. The two are considered armed and dangerous, and a substantial reward is offered for any information leading to their arrest (contact Inspector Javert.)

On the front page:
DE WINTER BOAT FOUND WITH MYSTERIOUS BODY
On the evening of June __, ____, evidence surfaced that the boat of Rebecca de Winter, who tragically disappeared four years ago in a sailing accident close to her Cornwall home, might be near shore. Using new SoNaR technology, the boat was located in the bay near Manderley, the great stone house where the de Winter family has lived for centuries.
After her disappearance, a body, which Mrs. de Winter's husband, Max de Winter, claimed to be hers, turned up near Edgecoombe, and was interred in the de Winter crypt at Manderley. While the discovery of the boat itself is nothing exciting, a diver was sent down to see if the boat could be raised, and a severely decomposed body was discovered to be in the cabin. As Rebecca de Winter was famously a woman who never sailed with companionship, the identity of the body cannot be confirmed.
Is it possible that Max de Winter made a mistake? The body found at Edgecoombe had been in the ocean for four months; a body would be near-irrecognizable by then. But if Rebecca de Winter's body is in the cabin, the door is inexplicably shut. She was a locally well-known sailor, and won many local regattas in her converted fishing boat, Je Reviens, therefore putting a mistake so elementary in any sailor's book out of the question.
The boat has been raised and evidence is being collected for an inquest, to take place on the __th of this month. Famously remarried only eight months after his first wife's death, and to a woman he'd known for less than a month, de Winter's involvement in his wife's death has now been reconsidered. Sources who were in contact with de Winter before his remarriage claim that he "never appeared mournful" and "only acted distant".
Now the father of two children by his new wife, Micaela de Winter, nee Heekin, Max de Winter would do well to watch his steps. Given the mysterious circumstances of that night four years ago, and the new body's discovery, there are many beginning to doubt the original verdict of accidental death at sea. The upcoming inquest should put all doubts to rest, and serve justice where it is needed.

Found in the Paris tabloids:
Citizens have reported being terrorized one night by a strange creature haunting the alleys. Reported one horrified observer, "It wasnot altogether a bat, nor a wolf, nor a harpy, nor a ghost, nor a decomposed human female, but something I cannot and must not recall." Though none so far have been killed by this beast, several have been wounded.

(I'd make a joke about the police investigating reports from the Bois de Boulogne of spontaneous lightning and blue flame, only to dismiss it as not a threat once they found out it was only a mostly-polite teenager doing it, but I'd probably fumble the delivery. So... yeah. Good thread.)

Post by Adrian Veidt on Mar 20, 2009 16:22:48 GMT -5
LOOKING TO THE FUTUREL'Epoque 's Exclusive Interview With Adrian VeidtBusiness mogul, athlete, and philanthropist Adrian Veidt, formerly known as the superhero Ozymandias, has recently opened a new corporate branch of Veidt Industries here in Paris. We sent reporter Gaspard Larue to speak to Veidt about his longtime rivalry with biotechnology/entertainment firm GeneCo, his views on the tensions with the Soviet Union, his outlook on the future, and what it's like being one of the most important figures in modern history. L'EPOQUE: First and foremost, Mr. Veidt, I would like to thank you for granting this interview. I understand your schedule must be quite busy- ADRIAN VEIDT: I can assure you, it's no trouble at all. The people of Paris have every right to know their public figures, and I'm happy to oblige. E: So, if I may begin so bluntly, what made you decide to bring your operation to Europe? AV: It was a combination of factors. For one, it would be terribly naive to believe that it is only the USA and the USSR that are suffering from the tensions between them right now. Why should they be denied relief and study to try to prevent catastrophe, simply because they are not the main players in this most upsetting of games? E: So you believe war is imminent? AV: Only if humanity continues to live in denial of its better self. E: Pardon? AV: For every atrocity man has committed, have there not been a million miracles? I do not believe that we are entirely doomed as a race, but we are skirting dangerously close to extinction, and that is why now is a time for coming together, not pushing further and further apart with threats of 'mutually assured destruction'. E: But Mr. Veidt, upon looking at history at large- AV: All of the great crimes of the twentieth century could have been preventable, and so is this greatest of crimes looming over us. There is something of a domino effect at work, if you look closely enough. The Great War begat the Treaty of Versailles, which begat the depression that lead the German people to buy into Hitler's horrific outlook, which in turn begat the Second World War and the development of these bombs that the American and Soviet governments appear so eager to fling at one another. Had the Great War never occurred, we would not be faced with what we are faced with now. But it is never too late to try to achieve one's potential. E: You are most famous for your earlier career as Ozymandias. What lead you to trade in your costume for a business suit? AV: It was a combination of factors. After a while of staring a multitude of small evils in the face, such as I did as a costumed adventurer, it became clearer and clearer every day that fighting individual outbreaks of evil was not as effective as rooting out evil at its source. E: Though you still break out the costume for charity events. AV: Ah, yes. (laughs) What can I say? It makes for good publicity. And my early retirement allowed the Ozymandias persona to stay within the public's graces, which has been the key to its later success. E: Now, there has been a lot of discussion about your expansion to Paris mere months after Rotti Largo extended GeneCo to the same city- AV: Mr. Largo's enterprise is no threat to mine. If anything, I should say that he should be frightened of me. (laughs)E: I beg your pardon? AV: My quarrels with GeneCo have been followed avidly for years, of course, and I am not ashamed of them at all. E: Word has been spreading recently that Rotti Largo himself is dying of lung cancer. Have you considered buying out his company in order to redeem it? AV: The idea has occurred to me briefly, yes, but Mr. Largo does have three heirs of his own, and it will undoubtedly pass to one of them. Besides, whatever will the public read if our feud fades away? E: Is your dislike of GeneCo's policies based entirely in its repossession laws, or is it more personal? AV: The repossession policies are barbaric, of course, but I have always been in opposition to the company, ever since they began popularizing plastic surgery as a fashion statement. Saying that they can make a person better or worthier with no effort on the consumer's part- it is the exact opposite of the Veidt Method I am introducing this year. The Veidt Method can and will offer physical and spiritual improvement, but only through participation and work on the subscriber's part. GeneCo, meanwhile... (laughs again) Well, it's hard to support an entity that offers self-improvement for no work or effort, and I have always been a believer that no good is possible without sacrifice. The Veidt Method will be available through direct mail orders this summer. Also coming soon, Nostalgia Elite by Veidt- a new twist on the most popular fragrance of the past decade.

A Paris tabloid read:
Does the sudden disappearance and reappearance of the sun, together with the reports of strange beasts in the city, herald the end of days? Rows of houses were recently destroyed by some mysterious power, forcing their occupants to seek shelter elsewhere. According to one, who refused to give his name, "This can only be the work of the Evil One!"

A small column, likely to be missed by most people and several pages behind the interview with Adrian Veidt:
The body of an unknown girl, estimated age between sixteen and twenty years old, was found in an alleyway Thursday night, after having apparently suffered a brutal assault and then having her throat slashed. No prints were found on the body, and no weapon was left at the scene. Due to the nature of her injuries, sexual assault is suspected.
No one really noticed the article, or gave it much thought.
