"Thank you, but I'm not in it for pleasure." *She began to stack some books.* "A girl's got to make rent. Plus I found this really nice pair of boots..."

*Valmont tried to hide his surprise. Really, all women were whores, when you came right down to it.
Which he did. With alarming regularity.*
"I see," *he said.* "All a pose then, is it? The Scarlet Letter, the knees together. Holding out for a decent price?"

"Oh shut up, I was doing him a FAVOUR," *she snapped, her eyes narrowing.* "And I've never pretended to be anything I'm not. I'm not frigid, or a prude. I just don't like you."

"Someone's touched a nerve," *Valmont said.* "Question is, was it me or your mysterious favour recipient?"
*He looked her over.*
"I hope he appreciated you," *he said.* "Be a shame to put something like you off men for good."
*He tossed the book down on the desk, along with one franc.*
"Probably not your usual rate, but then, the service here is abominable," *he tsked.*

*Valerie slammed her ledger shut, hefted the wide leatherbound book and neatly slammed it sideways into Valmont's face.*
"Get out," *she snarled.*
((As her typist, I am sooooo sorry and my sleepy brain did not fully authorize the above.))

*When he'd recovered, Valmont grabbed her wrist with surprising strength for such a wiry man.*
"I'll thank you not to step up your abuse to the physical," *he said.* "Or I may be forced to respond in kind."
*He let go and adjusted his cuffs.*
"And I find it most indecorous. Do I take it you absolve yourself of your duties and want me to find my own book?"

"I told you to get out," *she said, her voice low and dangerous.* "Twice, now--get. Out."
You of all people do not get to insult my honour.

*Valmont bowed smoothly and, to make his point, grabbed the first book he laid his hands on.*
"As you wish, my lady."
*With pursed lips, he turned and left.
He didn't look at the title of the book until he got home. Les Liaisons dangereuses.*

*Valerie fumed under a black cloud for a good ten minutes after he left, brooding in silence to herself as she worked. Then:*
He took my book.
"Petit con! That DOES it."
*She flipped through the book of registered borrowers until she located his address. Grabbing her coat, she yelled to Giles that she had to go track down a book before storming out of the library.*

**...WELL THEN I CERTAINLY MISSED OUT ON SOME PLOT**
*Alexei was back, having of course aced his exams. He looked at the list of books his mother had asked him to get, including two Jane Austens and a Bronte... he always got Charlotte and Emily mixed up. He was also looking for himself, but nothing really seemed to catch his interest.*

*Valerie stomped back into the library with livid fury written on her face. She brushed past Giles and went to lock herself in the ladies' toilet and the head librarian did nothing to stop her. Pressing her back to the door, she slid down to the floor and began to cry softly.*

*He'd seen her go in, of course. And the look on her face. He immediately tucked his list in his pocket and went to knock on the door.*
"Valerie? Are you alright?" *He asked, loud enough for her to hear through the door but still soft enough that he didn't disrupt the library. His voice was never very loud, anyway, as he didn't like to raise his voice. Growing up around girls did that to you.*

"--n-no." *she sobbed, tipping her head back and staring at the ceiling as tears streamed down her cheeks.*

*He frowned, worried.*
"What happened?" *He asked, genuinely concerned. Even if emotions didn't show on his face (which, usually, they did) they always showed in his intonation.*

((Convenient, given the locked door.))
"He treats me like DIRT!" *she wailed.* "Like I'd only be worth something if I get him off."
