*Valmont snorted.*
"When has likable gotten anyone anywhere?" *he said.* "I don't see you winning any personality award."
*He grumbled as he gave over the franc.*
"Highway robbery," *he sniffed. His eyes shifted to the side for a moment, as if on the lookout for something.* "So... what are you reading?"

*She raised an eyebrow and leaned her chin on her fist for a moment.*
"I'm reading Northanger Abbey. Another of Austen's works and my personal favourite of hers. She marries a priest. It's lovely."
*She took the franc and put it in the cash box.*

*Valmont pursed his lips.*
"A priest? That sounds... promising."
*He liked corruption of the clergy.*
"I did like the bit where everyone thought Edward was married," *he offered. Then his voice dropped into a barely audible monotone.* "AndthepartwhereColonelBrandonrescuesMarianneintherain."

*Valerie bit her lower lip for a moment then raised a hand to cover her mouth to hide the grin that threatened, pretending to rub her nose as if a sneeze were coming.*
"Indeed?"

*Valmont colored. A delicate pink that went with his waistcoat.*
"Er... mistaken identity. It's... er... charming."

"Always is," *she said, turning to shelve some books AND hide her grin.*

*Valmont watched her backside. I mean, come on. It's Valmont. But he was multitasking.*
"So... What next?"

*She turned to look at him blankly.*
"...if you want another book, I can help you," *she said with a shrug.*

*Valmont's lips twitched.*
"What else would I be asking you for?" *he asked mildly.*

"I'm sure I haven't the faintest idea," *she said with equal sangfroid.* "If there's nothing else, monsieur, you must excuse me. I have work to do."

"Which is what I've asked you to do. Recommend another book."

*Valerie sighed.*
"If it will get you out of my hair," *she muttered, turning to pull a book from the shelf and handing it to him.*
"The Scarlet Letter. Enjoy. One week."

*Valmont hardly glanced at it.*
"You don't like me, do you?"

"I have no reason to like you, and more than one reason not to. One being that you don't like me."

*Did he not like her? He considered this.*
"It's true," *he mused.* "And not altogether uncommon."
*He waved the book.*
"Next week, then," *he said.* "A day late, I shouldn't wonder."
