*Instead of taking the paper, he took the hand that held it out.*
"You could join me."

"Mmm. Charmingly blunt as that invitation was, I already spent twenty minutes in the privvy this morning with a weather almanac."

((Don't know about Valmont, but I love her already.))
*Valmont looked her up and down.*
"It would be an insult to your obvious intelligence to attempt a crude ruse," *he said.* "But the invitation still stands. I'm much more talented than an almanac."

"I don't know about that. Cumulonimbus clouds really get my juices flowing."
*She picked her hand out of his grip and went back to shelve the catalogue under the desk with the other volumes.*
"Besides, haven't you got anyone better to do than a sixteen year old who shows no interest?"

*Valmont felt something turn over inside him. It was probably that morning's omelet.*
"Oh, lots," *he said.* "But it does to expand one's interests, from time to time."

"I've got work to do. There's plenty of bored, willing teenagers at the Opera Populaire down the street," *she said, beginning to push the trolley full of returned books towards the shelves to replace them.*
"Auf wiedersehen, Sparky."

*Valmont had never been spoken to in this manner before. He stared after her.*
"Sparky?" *he muttered as he turned on his heel, vowing to get his revenge.*

*She snickered openly as she watched him leave.*
"Ahhh Dieu, I love my job," *she muttered to herself, glancing over one of the titles as she re-shelved the books.*
Les Liaisons dangereuses...I don't believe I've read this one, yet.
*She set it aside on her desk for later.*

*CONSIDER THIS SOME TIME AFTER MEETING IN THE CAFE*
*Valmont had avoided the library, and the coffee house, assiduously. But it hadn't kept the annoying chit from his mind. There was something about her, despite her youth and ill-breeding.
She knew something he didn't. And she knew she did. And she wasn't sharing.
He wasn't sure what he was going to do when he came back to the library. But here he was, striding in purposefully, aiming for the desk she stood behind, looking for all the world like a man on a mission.*
"I want a book," *he said, surprising himself.*

"I'm sorry but a younger man has just beaten you to it," *she said.*
"...he checked out every edition of the Kama Sutra we had on hand."

"No," *he said, somewhat flustered.* "A... a real book."
*Younger man his ass. She was mocking him.*

*For the first time since their meeting, she looked remotely impressed.*
"Fiction or non-fiction?"

"I don't know," *he said, not having considered any part of his visit. Which must mean he was coming down with something.* "Um... What would you recommend? Isn't that your job?"

"Fiction," *she said, pursing her lips.* "Reality doesn't strike me as your favourite subject."
*She rummaged under the counter and handed him a novel with a wicked smile.*
"Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. A classic and one of my favourites."

*Valmont stared at it dubiously.*
"A woman wrote this."
