*Valmont paused a moment, just staring at her as if she was stupid.*
"Certainly not," *he said.* "What an absurd idea. A passing fancy, merely."
*He dove in close to her ear again, his words tickling.*
"You'd love that, wouldn't you? It would read like a novel; young innocent hothead tames the savage debauched noble, and ironically doesn't care a jot. It would have everything: class, gender politics, erotic interludes..."
*His lips traced her jawline.*

"Innocent?" *she chuckled richly at that.* "You were not my first, and you'll not be my last."
"I'd make a fortune, were I to write such a book." *she sighed.*

"I never expected to be," *he murmured, his tongue gently teasing the shell of her ear.*
Just the best.
"You should," *he continued.* "Write a book, I mean."
*His hand pressed into her hair, weaving it between his fingers as he moved in to kiss her.*

"I intend to, now," *she remarked.*
"...Valmont?" *she murmured against his lips as a burning hot kiss lingered between them.* "How long is this going to go on? I mean--is this going to be the last time you bother me? Or we bother each other"

*Valmont actually seemed to consider the question.*
"I don't know," *he said honestly, his fingers teasing at her ankle, threatening passage up her leg.* "This wasn't the plan... If you wanted me to forget you, you've done a terrible job of it."

"Well how could I possibly be more terrible than I've been to you?" *she cried.* "I've tried everything I can imagine to drive you away!" *A free hand tugged at the knot in his cravat, baring his neck to inquisitive fingertips.*

"But you still want me," *he pressed, releasing her hair to fall about her shoulders.* "Admittedly that, like other factors, is beyond your control. You still have much to learn about men, Valerie, if you think ill-treatment is sufficient to cool ardor."
*And speaking of which, his heart was beating faster already. Noticing her glasses consciously for the first time, he removed them carefully.*

"What in God's name can I DO, then, if you're the clever one?" *she whispered, her eyes straying to follow his hand as he set her glasses down a safe distance away.*

*Valmont cupped her face with his hand.*
"Give in," *he whispered intently.* "If we're both lucky... I'll forget about you."
*It had to happen, after all. Sooner or later. Nothing like this ever lasted.*

*She stared at him for a moment, the air heavy--as if she were about to speak. Then she merely slid her fingers through his hair and pulled him closer, placing a hot and almost painful kiss on his lips. She shifted against him, knocking over the pile of books behind her--they clattered and flapped to the floor in a cloud of dust, surrounding her with the scent of leather and paper, the pages the slightest bit rough with age.*

*Valmont answered her kiss with passion, though, oddly, without the bruising edge. He lowered her to the strewn volumes, hoping he wouldn't sneeze on her. His lips moved from her mouth to her jawline, her neck, his hands caressing her through her dress and starting in on buttons, his leg falling between hers as they reclined.*

*She shut her eyes, hoping she could pretend he was someone--anyone else.*
I'm so sorry, Alexei...
*Her best friend's kind face rose before her, his gentle voice whispering in her ear, it seemed, and, somehow, she relaxed. True, she didn't love Alexei--not in the way he'd loved her--but she had never hated him as she hated Valmont.*

*He did not like the closed eyes, but he left it for now. Better that she relaxed, gave in, let him have this. Let him have her so he might forget. It would not do; Valerie was interfering with his life, his concentration, his affairs. She filled his senses, her hard words interrupting his thoughts even when she wasn't there. The only solution that he could see was this. To give in--both of them--once more. Do it right so he wouldn't have to again.
Not that it was so odious a chore. And indeed, even the long wait, the bickering, added spice. He was never short on vigor, but he'd not felt like this since he was a schoolboy. Still, he held back, knowing that part of solving this puzzle meant doing right by her and having no doubts or regrets on that score.
He eased the unbuttoned dress from her shoulders, drinking her in, all the sights and smells and sounds of her soft breathing, her chest rising and falling. His touch was light, almost reverent--though still teasing. Today he would bring not only skill but feeling to bear on his performance. His every gesture was marked by a curious sincerity.*

*Valerie twisted awkwardly free of the rest of her dress. Her skin was burning with all the frustrations of the last months and--fine, she wanted him. She wanted this. Still, as she let his fingers drift over the lines of her limbs and body, she turned her face from his. Kissing him had not been enough--was not what she needed.*

*Valmont buried his face in the crook of her shoulder and his hands claimed her softly. He had to remember her, so he could forget. He drew back, to take her in again, before bending back down to kiss his way down her body with agonizing slowness. He knew so many sensitive places on a woman's body, so many that were not obvious. But he would get to that, too. His hands ghosted up her thighs.*
