"Oh, mein gott...I'm so sorry, Becca. I can't imagine what sort of pain that's put you through."
*Judge? He couldn't judge her.*
"I can't fault you for your feelings. They do you credit, in fact. I could only wish to have a heart to match."

"No...no, Rudolf," *she said, tearfully turning to face him with a deep, shaky breath.*
"There's more."

"More?"
*He took her hands in his*
"What more could you have gone through?" He asked incredulously.

"I...I...we..." *her lower lip trembled for a moment.*
"You have a son." *her voice was barely above a whisper.*

*A son. He had a son. He felt suddenly light-headed, but at the same time...somethin akin to relief, almost.
He leaned in and kissed her gently*
"I'd all but given up on children...I thought...that it was something beyond me."

*Becca wanted to weep. She did not deserve this man. She pulled away.*
"I'm sorry. I wanted it to change nothing...but it has. Of course it has. I cannot...I will not let you take him away from me."
*Pain was evident in her voice.*

"Becca." He said firmly.
"I would never take a child from his mother. Never."

"But you'll want to see him...spend time with him...and I won't be there..."
*She raised a hand to her face for a moment, brushing it suspiciously against her cheek.*
"You know you cannot marry me. It would be inappropriate. Your people...your family...would expect that you take some noble, virtuous virgin as your bride. Not me. Not the divorcee-cum-widow daughter of a dancing teacher who bore a bastard son three years ago and then went and had another man's children as well."
*She stared at him.*
"You may love me despite all that, but they will not."

"Becca...there is no such thing as a virtuous, virignal nobleman's daughter. The things they've done and do..."
*He shook his head*
"They are hardly in a place to judge you, my love. Trust me on this--you are far better than that lot could wish they were. As for family...I have none left. They've all gone dead or missing."
*He held her hands in his*
"You're all I have left. You, and...my son. Faced with the choice of strangers that don't care, or you--it's easy for me to decide."

*She rested her forehead against his shoulder, her hot tears dropping onto his sleeve.*
"I'm so afraid...I do not know if...if I can be...everything you want me to be."

*He wrapped comforting arms around her, simply holding her close and stroking her hair*
"I have all faith in you. You've weathered so much, and haven't been broken by it. You don't give yourself enough credit."

*Becca put her arms around his waist and held on to him. It felt so nice to let someone else be strong, for a change. It had been so long since she had been fearless...so long since she had let go of her worry. Her breath left her in a steady, even rush, carrying with it a single, gentle whisper.*
"...Rudolf..."

*He stood there quietly with her for a moment, before speaking in an equally soft voice*
"Marry me?"

*What he'd hoped he'd one day hear from her... In response, he leaned down to capture her lips in a kiss *
