*Buffy frowned.* I'm not really sure how to say, since, I mean, how do I describe something like that? I'm from California. But... there hasn't been a war, or anything like that. I mean, not an important one. *Inwardly, she smiled. She knew all about "very close friends" that invoked long silences. She briefly tuned in on the converation Ramsey and Miss Bennet were having and had to refrain from unladylike snorting. She couldn't imagine saying stuff like that about her own sister, or vice versa. She'd died for her and all, but that didn't mean she was going to be all nice or anything.*

"If your sister is an angel in temperament, then I feel sure you must be a goddess of both temperament and beauty," Ramsey said, using a flirtatious wink to disguise the sincerity in his voice.

*Elizabeth laughed again, a near-constant state, and one that suited her, shaking her head.* "Not I, Lord Cheltenham. I'm far to apt to leap to conclusions and be dreadfully stubborn and suspicious. And as for beauty--I suppose when a family of daughters is so poor as we, we had best make use of what Nature has blessed us with, for it's all we'll ever have." *She smiled crookedly, almost to herself, her expression turning introverted for a moment.* "Even so, it would do me little good to be beautiful, if it were so. Nay, don't argue," *she said, catching a negating look from Ramsey,* "for it would only show you to have shockingly bad taste in beauty! You have not seen my sister Jane, or you would not think so much of my looks as you seem to; and even had I such fortune to be attractive, what would I make of it? Had I ten proposals of marriage, not one would be of any use to me, since I could have no assurance of love based on character, prudence and presence of mind rather than whatever material charms I may possess."

I was young then...I don't remember"

"Ten proposals of marriage, you say?" Ramsey mused, catching Miss Bennet's eye and grinning slyly. "Have you any currently?"

"Only one, sir, and upon my refusal thereof, I was informed by the gentleman that it was highly unlikely such an advantageous offer should be made to me again. Thus I am condemned to a life of chaste solitude at the word of one of the biggest fools in England," *she grinned cheerily and rolled her eyes at the memory of Mr. Collins, although she saddened a moment later as she thought of Charlotte. The moment passed, however, and she was happy once more. It was not in her nature to brood on such matters.* "So you see it is a hopeless case, is it not, Lord Cheltenham?"

"I certainly wouldn't call it hopeless..." Ramsey paused for a long moment, then smiled quickly, nudging his horse along. "We can never predict what the future will bring us," he said in a light tone.

"'Twould be frightfully boring if we could predict the future. Having one's life so structured, so mapped out, so planned down to the last detail--of course there are certain moral and social patterns one must follow to maintain self-respect and good character, but beyond that I don't see why anyone bothers to bow to the whims of people wholly unconnected to themselves simply for the sake of fashion or mistaken 'propriety.'" *Lizzie shrugged.* "I'm afraid I bore you with my talk as much as visions of the future would bore me..."

"No, you are far from boring," Ramsey said sincerely. "It's so refreshing to find a young lady who wishes to bravely blaze her own path through life instead of merely following the footsteps of others." He gave her a cheeky smile. "In fact, I find you so brave that I know you won't decline my invitation to ride on my horse with me for a moment or two? I promise I will hold you very tightly."

"I have said I am no horsewoman, sir, and indeed you ought to believe me," *said Elizabeth, smiling merrily.* "And since I am no damsel in distress at present, such behaviour would seem to set propriety at naught."

"But surely since you are so brave," Ramsey teased, "You would not mind taking a step forward to a new adventure? And besides, this thread is slowly getting boring and I'm running out of things to say..."

LOL @ Austen for being boring. "You should know my courage always rises at every attempt to indimidate me," *said Lizzie with a grin.* "And riding a horse can be no grand adventure, although it be a task I avoid for the most part. I've only to expect adventure if the horse spooks and runs amok." *She held out her gloved hand towards Ramsey with a smile which was slightly crooked with sudden apprehension of the great animal he rode upon, despite her courage and general good spirits.*

((Austen? Boring? Never! This thread is just boring as far as the Sueniverse goes...))
Ramsey brought his horse close to the carriage and smiled encouragingly at her. In one swift movement, he had taken her hand and circled his arm round her waist, pulling her up neatly to sit sideways in front of her.
"There, are you comfortable?"

"Oh! Yes!" *Elizabeth turned her head, peering about her with sudden interest.* "I had not though it would be quite so high..." *she said, her voice a trifle lower than usual.*
