*Lark nodded, a knowing smile blossoming like she'd won something. Not that she wanted to wait. Dear Lord, she didn't want to. But still...seemed silly to not now. It wasn't like it'd be forever now. She sighed, turning her face into his hand, savoring his touch.*
"Don't mean we can't do...other...stuff, right?"
*There was an innocence in her eyes, though her body read the impish vixen.*

*Jake's jaw dropped a little. Not that he wasn't pleased at the ideas her comment were spawning.*
"...beg yer pardon?"

"Well..." *She stammered, not exactly sure what she was talking about either.*
"If...we're all promised and such...I mean, is it so wrong to want..."
*She shrugged.*
"To get to know you better?"
*She swallowed anxiously and her eyes fell shyly.*
"I mean, there's something between, right? I..."
I don't really know for sure.

*Jake laughed and kissed her forehead.*
"In our case, there's married and not-married. In-between is fer other people."

"Oh."
*Lark blushed deeper than she'd thought was possible. She quickly stepped away from him, busying herself at wiping away the mud and dust on her skirts.*
"I...I'm sorry."
I'm so stupid to suggest...he must think terrible things...
*She was flustered and she glowed with it, embarrassed to the core.*

*Jake grinned at her shyness, catching her back in his arms and kissing her ear.*
"Though I won't say I'm not tempted," *he whispered.*

*She squirmed away, turning her face from him, trying to hide the redness of hers.*
"I didn't mean to assume nothing. I just..."
*She shook her head.*
"I'm sorry. Really."

"Lark...what if something happened? What if you got pregnant n' what if I got killed or somethin'? I couldn't leave you with that...that shame or that hardship. I wanna make a home with you, when the time is right."

"Oh! Oh no..." *Lark shook her head quickly. She may be naive but she'd been around enough livestock to know the ins and outs of things. She looked back at him, quickly dropping her gaze.*
"Not that. Just..."
*She shook her head again. It seemed stupid now. She glanced up at him furtively.*
"So...do you want to not be kissing til then either?" *Her voice sounded hesitant.* "I mean...I can go...if you want."

"Now I don't think we need t'be that drastic," *he said.* "I c'n keep my head t'gether if you can."

*She rocked in place, wringing her hands and shrugging.*
"I'm sorry. I'm just out of my element on this one. I don't know..."
*Her eyes found his.*
"...what I'm supposed to be doing."

"Really?" *Lark looked genuinely surprised. Not that she'd expected him to have been married before or anything, just...it seemed odd that he wouldn't have had...other lady friends.*
"You ain't...been with someone before?" *The disbelief read in her voice.*

"Uh..." *Jake flushed, scratching the back of his neck.*
"N--I wanna say no--well, what I mean is...that's not to say I--in terms of bein'...uh...when ya care 'bout someone..."
*He cleared his throat.*
"...shouldn't we both be at work?"

*Lark frowned, knowing that she was being put off. And she didn't look one ounce pleased about it, her lips tightening.*
"Course. I guess...if you want to come by later, you can."
*She answered flatly and turned away, walking slowly to the gate of the fence this time instead of trying to scale it.*
