He smiled at the carelessness. It was somehow more reassuring than a perfectly composed room.
"I gotta say, you've taken the news of what I am pretty well."

She looked back "I'll freak out about it tomorrow when I'm nursing my head."

He shrugged.
"Maybe. But you'd be surprised how some people aren't that bothered by it."

"Really?" She asked with a laugh "I mean I'm sure at any minute now you're going to totally freak on me, drain me of all my blood and run away laughing. But fuck it whatever."

"No. But there are plenty that would." He said quietly.
"And don't you care that it's possible?"

"No" she kicked off her shoes in to a corner and went in to the kitchen to start the coffee pot.

Her attitude utterly baffled him.
"But...why? Don't you care if you die?"

"Not really" she said flatly and pulled out the filter.

"How do you even get to such a point? Don't you think anything about you deserves to be preserved?"

She set the filter in to the coffee maker and closed the lid.
With her hands on the counter she turned to Alex "I did once."

He leaned on the counter across from her.
"And what happened?"

"Life happened" she grabbed the pot and filled it up with water "you don't know me kid, you have no clue the crap I've put up with."

"I'm not a kid. In fact, I'm probably older than you. Vampire, remember? And you want stories? I've got 'em, too."
He realized he was starting to sound old, but maybe he needed to in this situation.
"Look, I'm sorry I'm brought it up, all right? I just...I've seen bad things, too, and I almost gave up...but I found a way to keep going."

"It's term of endearment, shit" she hit the brew button and turned around "well I haven't found a reason not to do the things I'm doing okay? I've failed at every damn venture I've attempted, all I'm good at is partying, I thought we went over this all ready?"
She rubbed her temple "Look I know you're just trying to be nice okay? You're the first guy in a long time to be nice and actually mean it" she thought about Matthew and almost laughed "it's just, look, I'm not exactly ready to go spilling out my secrets and sob stories to someone I just met."

"Of course not." He said reasonably.
"I think vampires have this uncontrollable impulse where they just have to grill you about everything because they don't understand humans anymore, or something.
Well. Except me. I'm not that far removed. I guess I'm a meddler, so I'll leave your life story alone for now."
He was grinning once he'd finished speaking.
"I guess I'm just more social than most of my kind tend to be."
