*Esmeralda and Djali had scouted out the largest crowd they could find before Esmeralda motioned for Djali to stop. She pulled out her tambourine, tied her shawl around her waist, and began to dance, as Djali tapped his foot and nodded towards an old hat, turned over to collect whatever money the crowd might feel generous about parting with.
She was alone in Paris. But she wasn't without skill.*

*Radu had been wondering around the streets of Paris, looking for something to take his mind off of his brother. Spotting a large crowd Radu walked over to see what was going on. A young girl was dancing in the middle of the crowd. She looked so young and innocent, but yet as she danced there was something seductive about her.
Radu walked over to where the hat lay and threw in a hand full of gold coins, his eyes never leaving the girl.*

*Esmeralda smiled with innocent gratitude at the generous man. She could not count it from, here, of course, but it was clearly a good deal of money. Djali would guard it from beggars and thieves. She continued to dance, but there was something in the man's eyes which confused and disturbed her, though she could put no name to it.*
"Thank you, m'sieur," *she called anyway.*

"You are welcome, mademoiselle."
*Radu replied grinning like a wolf who just spotted a tasty looking sheep.*
"What is your name?"

*Esmeralda came to a slow, whirling pause.*
"Esmeralda, m'sieur," *she said in accented French, curtsying prettily.*

"Esmeralda."
*Radu repeated, his Romanian accent making the name sound more foreign and somehow sensual.*
"Aren't you cold, dancing in the street without a jacket on?"

"No," *she said, a slight flush rising to her cheeks hinting that she detected something untoward in his remark, though she couldn't say why. He was very handsome, though, and clearly rich.* "My dancing keeps me warm."

"And what if you are done dancing? How do you keep warm when the night comes and there are no crowds to preform for?"
