*Spike fought back a smile. She was so adorable when she was all defensive. He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender.*
"There there, luv. I didn't mean to strike a chord."
*As she calmed, he lowered his hands and his expression softened.*
"Did you get magic-fied to then? I mean, I'm pretty sure that's what happened to me."

*Buffy blinked.*
"But didn't you see me? I jumped right into the portal-thingy; I'd say that's magification. Though I don't think this is where Glory's from. I mean, it would explain some things."
*She looked at him, a horrible thought suddenly presenting itself.*
"But it doesn't explain how you got here. You left her. You followed me, and you left her. You promised!"

*It took a long moment for Spike to process things. But finally realization passed through him and his eyes grew very wide. His lips parted and he lifted his hands in defense.*
"Whoa there...just a tick. I didn't leave her. I swear. I don't know how to explain this, but you're familiar enough with the wackiness of the hocus pocus...Buffy, I'm not from that moment. I'm..."
from after we did the sexing and the souling and the deading.
"...from later."

*Buffy half-lowered her fists, raised in preparation for a good pop to his nose. How dare he?!*
"But..."
*She bit her lip. He didn't have any reason to lie about it. Well, other than being Spike.*
"How much later?" *she asked quietly. That implied... a life without her. It implied she'd not come back. Who was taking care of Dawn?*

*Spike opened his mouth to answer, but then realized that this may be one of those weird paradox things that Fred always seemed so worried about.*
"I'm...I'm not sure I should tell you, 'case you go back and all know the future bit. But I will tell you that the little bit is safe and with you. Not quite sure where at the moment, but I think England or Italy or something."
*He lowered his head bashfully and took a small step forward.*
"Everything worked out...as much as these things do. Both of you made it and are safe together."

*A wave of relief washed over her. Somehow, she didn't doubt Spike's word. He'd always looked out for Dawn. She couldn't deny that. Not after Glory...*
"Thanks," *she said. Her mind swam with questions; about Dawn, herself, the future...* "You mean we're not in Sunnydale?"

Sunnydale doesn't exist anymore.
*Spike bit his lip, trying to figure out how to explain it. She always made him feel like a nervous schoolboy.*
"Not anymore. You are traveling...helping the others. I mean, others. 'Cause, you know...that's what you do. Help people."
You really suck at this.

*Buffy's eyes narrowed.*
"You're hiding something," *she said.* "Something big. And you seemed so surprised to see me."
*She put her hands on her hips.*
"C'mon, Spike. What is it?"

*Spike sighed heavily, perplexed.*
"Three years. That's how long it's been since...since Glory."
*His lashes trembled and his voice grew quiet.*
"I do remember what I said. The promise. To protect her. If I'd have done that, even if I didn't make it, you wouldn't have had to jump. But I want you to know I did save you. Not when it counted, of course, but after that. Every night after that. I'd see it all again, and do something different. Faster, or more clever, you know? Dozens of times, lots of different ways. Every night, I save you."
*He cleared his throat.*
"But you came back...things moved on. You...you moved on."
*His eyes darted back up to her for a moment.*

((o noes! Not the trembly lashes! I am slain!))
*Buffy felt a horrible twisting in her gut at his words. It only became worse as he went on. Three years... Every night I save you. She looked down, hands dropping to her sides. So she had gone away. She had left them. And he... he'd stuck around. She glanced up, not knowing what to say.
He was a vampire. And he'd kept his word to a slayer. And since it was Spike, who sucked at lying, she knew he wasn't.
She sank onto a step, laying her chin in one hand.*
"Hey," *she said, trying to break the mood, the uncomfortable, naked emotion in Spike's voice, the eyes she couldn't meet.* "I thought you'd be proud. Your third slayer, and all."

*Spike felt a cold stab in his chest. That wasn't what he wanted. He would never want that. Not even if she never would see him again...he couldn't bear the thought of her as some kill. He swallowed and shrugged slightly.*
"It doesn't hold the appeal it once did. Not since..."
The falling in love and mad sexing.
"...the whole soul thing."
*He couldn't raise his eyes or his voice.*

*Buffy glanced up sharply.*
"What did you say?" *Spike wasn't meeting her eyes. She surged to her feet and punched him, hard, in the face.*
"How dare you?!" *she demanded fiercely.* "Is that your ploy now? To make me think you're like him? I knew you were low, Spike, but this..."
*She shook her head, at a loss for words.
And to think she'd just begun thinking of him almost as a person.*

*Spike recoiled in shock at the blow. There's the old Buffy, how had he forgotten? His fist pulled back, but as he looked up to her, his heart softened. He just held the pose for a moment before he lowered his hand again, visibly perplexed. He growled between clenched teeth, almost muttering to himself.*
"I'm nothing like him."
I don't lose my soul if I have a moment of true happiness.
*Setting his jaw to one side, he continued a bit calmer, if still vexed.*
"Doesn't matter what you believe...it wasn't no curse either. I fought hard to earn..."
One to be good enough for you.
*He shut his eyes in futility and lowered his head to one side.*
"Not that you'd believe me. Guess in your time, I hadn't done too much to earn your trust."
Except keep Dawn's secret even as Glory tortured me endlessly.
"I can't expect you to...never mind. I can leave you to it if you'd rather. I didn't mean to show up and waste your time."

"You're right. You are nothing like him," *she said grimly. He'd fought at her side, looked out for Dawn. But that didn't make it okay for him to talk about Angel. She was disappointed that he hadn't hit back. That was easier.*
"You weren't wasting my time until you started lying to me. I was happy to see you, remember? What would make you try something like that? Why do you always make me mad at you?"
