"It is the kingdom disintegrating that concerns me," said Odin, as he regained his composure, and looked out the window at the tranquility of the garden, and the golden spires of Asgard beyond it. He looked at it so long it seemed that he had forgotten his son was there, and when he spoke again, it was so quietly that perhaps he had. "I have done evil things for the glory of Asgard. But I will not see its people ruined by my failures."

He studied his father for a long time before admitting, very quietly, "I have done far more evil for the glory of myself."

Odin started, as though surprised from a reverie, and tittered, somewhat darkly in spite of the uncharacteristic levity of his laughter. He laid a hand on Loki's shoulder.
"Then you are ignorant of a greater evil - of believing that your glory and that of the empire are one and the same. But come, come. You only attempted to finish.... what I had begun, long, long ago. No, I cannot pretend any longer that the peace with Jotunheim was anything noble. I am too old, my life too much spent, to lie."

“Can’t imagine the jotnar being very fond of this getting out,” Loki said wryly, looking at his hands.

"I do not know how long it will be before we have peace, true peace, with the jotnar," Odin acceded.

He swallowed.
"Do they live?"

"Some, yes. They have rebuilt much, but have much yet to do. You destroyed their capital city and killed all their ruling family, so they have undergone a change in leadership."

Loki grimaced.
“Not in much of a position to give them back the casket in exchange for staying in their own yards, I suppose?”

"I suppose that is up to the king to decide, isn't it?"

“Can’t exactly use the argument that I was young and reckless at the time,” he said glumly, though he had by now at least lifted his head to look outward again.
After a moment, Loki looked at his father again- not accusingly, not angrily, but concerned and curious.
“Is this truly faith in me you’re feeling, or simply desperation in the face of Thor’s refusal?”

"Oh, no, it's not that," said Odin, glancing sidelong at his son. He had had a friend in his youth with a reputation for mischief, but it had always been Odin who had been hardest to read, capable of a stultifyingly enigmatic expression that had suited him well as a king and much more poorly as a father. "I am feeling a certain desperation, but it is not at that. In truth, the task I leave to you may not have an equal, but the task falls to you all the same. The faith I have is that you will rise to it. I will not live to see much more than that, I am afraid."

"What task- unless you mean the throne itself-"

"More or less," the old man allowed.

"More or less?" Loki repeated. He had learned a great deal of evasivesness from his father, and had a feeling it was being turned on him now. "What do you mean, more or less-"
