"Indeed," she amusedly responded.
Sydney watched him for a brief moment. She watched his color turn redder by the second as she tightened her grip on his tie. She had no objection of continuing but his eyes began to change and she knew she couldn't keep it up longer if she wanted him conscious. So reluctantly, she let go and dropped him and his head hit the floor with a satisfying thud.
"Therein lies your mistake," she said, slightly out of breath. "You've become dependent... Like a common opium addict. The only difference being that your chosen opium den is an opera house."

"Oh, do allow me my vices," James panted, automatically reaching up to caress his throat, where the act of attempted strangulation had manifested itself in a thick, uneven line of crimson. He clutched his brow, feeling a little light-headed. "They're all I have. Besides...what's life without a few sour apples? They're the best sort. But you wouldn't know that, would you, being oh-so-rigidly incorruptible. Tell me, Miss Howard, what lies beyond the mask?"

Perhaps he needed a reminder of their carnal encounters.
"You've seen beyond it," she reminded coolly. "Or have you forgotten?"
Really, she shouldn't have used the past tense. He was seeing it now. He was wrong to assume that there was something underneath this; that, somehow, there was something truer and perhaps more gentle than the ruthlessness she was exhibiting in that moment.

He cocked a brow at this before purring, "Ah, my apologies. How presumptuous of me to state that you've ever worn a mask, when the mask has always worn you. So, you've bitten into the forbidden fruit. And pray tell, how do you find the taste? Does it suit your palate?"

"The tales of that first bite don't begin with you, Mister North," she said, dismissive of the idea. "I am the product of an education that began when I was nineteen."
"But to call it 'The Forbidden Fruit' would be erroneous: no appeal to my vanity was made in order to seduce me into corruption."
Sydney rose, stepped over him and towards a window. The day was approaching its golden hour and she watched the change as she spoke. "The aforementioned education was thrust upon me and it consumed me like a disease. And like a plague, it was unrelenting and contagious. I fought it until I realised it had brought me before a divergent path: one was that was destruction and the other was that was immunity. I chose the latter.
"And so I began to treat everything like the game that it was and detached myself. I became a master tactician. I learned to wholly exclude my emotions from the equation when needed. At first, it wasn't easy but it soon became second nature. I made sure I was intimately acquainted with all of my vices so they would never control me. It wasn't a thrill I was looking for, it was knowledge; because, you see, the Universe had presented me with a single moment that proceeded to undo an identity I had so completely understood. I was convinced that, by that logic, everything must operate under a similarly concise principle. And in the end, I found that principle to be wonderfully simple: possess or be possessed. Capture the King..." She trailed off, deep in thought.
Snapping out of it, Sydney undid the first few buttons on her golden dress, revealing a glimpse of her neck. She found the nigh neckline suddenly restrictive.
"So no, while I don't find your particular brand of chess to be a revelation," she turned, looking down at his recumbent form, "I do find you suit my palate just fine."

North hardly shifted his position on the ground during the entirety of her story, craning his head upwards every now and then and making a few "hmm" sounds that conveyed his interest in the subject of the woman's background, although he found it curiously lacking in personal flourishes. A shame, really, for he quite liked his share of dark, meaty secrets.
In the end, he merely pouted.
"Just fine, Miss Howard? I'd certainly hoped that I made a stronger impression than that."

"Sorry to disappoint you," she said with enunciated diction. But as she strode over, she reconsidered her words. "Still, my times with you have been the only instances in recent memory that I've allowed myself to be controlled by my emotions."
Sydney lowered herself down to her knees. Her voluminous golden skirt draped over his form like a pool of sunlight. She had stopped right over his left arm and hand so that all he had to do was reach up to feel her under all her layers of clothing. But in a move bound to surprise him, she decided to indulge him further: she moved and straddled his hips, but made sure she left space between them by hovering over him.
"It seems wrath and lust are sins made more deadly when intertwine."

"Indeed," James curtly nodded. He traced his fingers across the inside of her thighs, before clenching them in a tight fist--his attempt to restrain himself from taking her just then. "Although I do find it curious that you would actively pursue such vices with me, given your own admittance that our little romps are enjoyed neither for the thrill nor for their, shall we say, academics. You must have sated your knowledge of the carnal by now. Or perhaps this is a supplemental exercise in precisely that?"

The sudden pause in his movements seemed to confuse her: her head tilted and her eyes betrayed her curiosity. To her recollection, he had been apt at curbing his violent tendencies but restraint of desire wasn't something to which she was accustomed-- not when she was this close.
"One can seldom sate wrath and lust simultaneously. I find your receptiveness quite convenient," she explained. Sydney maintained their distance, such as it were. Instead, the only movements she made were to reach backwards a bit towards her laced boots.
"Not to mention I find it entertaining that you manage to both disgust me and," she paused to consider her words, "...pique my interests."
When she brought her arm forward, there was a sheathed stiletto in her hand.

James hissed at the sight of the blade, witty rejoinder all but forgotten.
"What are you playing at?" he spat, propping himself up on his elbows and scooting slightly away from her.
