*She had shared her story, knowing that those two situations shared a resemblance. And she regarded him knowingly again as she shook her head.*
"No... you wouldn't," *she said, her tone simple yet sad. But for whom, she didn't know.* "Not yet."
"It wasn't until he finally visited his friend's grave years later that things started to change-- not over night but... once he had faced it and realized that there was nothing he could have done, he wasn't afraid anymore."
*Lois had arrived in Paris months after what had happened in London and it wasn't until only a few days ago that she had read the papers. She didn't have the courage to say everything without an analogy...*

Bruce had almost the distinct impression that Lois could read his mind, which of course was ridiculous. It was far more likely that, being a news reporter, she was simply extremely good at reading people and keeping her facts straight.
"...you're right. My dad used to tell me it was hard for me to let things go. That I had a stubbornness about that."

*Lois let out a quick but deep sigh and looked at him.*
"I guess that makes two of us," *she said, the beginnings of a grin tugging at her lips.* "Except I kinda figured it out myself. The only things my dad used to say to me were lectures about how good I had it compared to him and his farm boy past."
*She rolled her eyes and chuckled at the memory of how annoyed she used to get.*

He smiled back.
"Ever get a story about how he had to walk to school in the snow, up a hill both ways..."

*She stared at him, her mouth gaping. It was the kind of expression one would reserve for a psychic.*
"How'd you know!" *she said with a laugh.* "That and how he had to wake up at five in the morning to fork hay."
"Can't imagine you having to sit through things like that."

"I mostly got the stories from Alfred--he was always telling me about when he was a boy in England..." He said with a grin.

"Oh! He told me the one about when he was in Burma. I thought it was fascinating. Psycho bandits without a cause. They should make a movie about it," *she said, remembering his story almost word for word.*
"You know... you're really lucky to have him. He's like that cool grandpa that gives wise advice and knows everything."

"Oh, Burma. Yeah, you could just do a film about his escapades there. It'd probably do well..."
Bruce was smiling broadly. Alfred, the last bit of family he had left, had been big influence on him.
"I'm glad that he's here. I can't imagine there not being Alfred."

*She nodded and smiled.*
"Me neither. Kind of like how I can't imagine you not being here."
*It wasn't until the very end of that sentence that she realized how her words sounded. But really, she didn't mean anything other than an appreciation of what a large part of her life he had become.*

It'd been a long time since there had been this kind of warmnth, feeling of companionship. The smile stayed put, perhaps growing a bit.
"I can't imagine there not being a Lois."

"You certainly don't owe me anything."

*With a smile, she leaned over, hitting his shoulder playfully with hers.*
"But if I did, you could put me in a ring and make me work for it," *she joked, straightening her back and feigning seriousness.* "Or we could have a match. I'd win, of course."
*Holding her chin up high, Lois turned and flashed him a cocky smile.*

"Ohhh? I don't think I could make people fight for their room and board...maybe they'd just have to play nice on the premises and not eat all of the dessert."

*The slightest tinge of guilt flashed across her face at the mention of desserts. She had kinda... raided their supply of rocky road ice cream a while back, hoping it would help. She quickly brushed it aside, convincing herself that it was a just a coincidence.*
"Pfft. Chicken," *she teased, trying to but failing at holding back a big smile.*
