"Oh, Andre, I'm done with this glass," she said, holding it out in the direction of the man that had brought it for her.
"Thanks."
No, she hadn't noticed the Ringmaster, as the general noise of the crowd out front and backstage helped to maks his footsteps.

Gwynplaine had not missed a performance, whenever possible. Of course he had his own, which tempered his attendance, but if he could he was there in the audience, scarf pulled tightly around his face.
He told himself it was to support her, but he seldom made his presence known, and deep in his heart he knew he was merely torturing himself.
But Josephine had treated him kindly, and the temptation to speak to her again was too much to bear. He went backstage, only to see a rather shady fellow--familiar enough in this sort of environment--lounging about. It was clear she did not know he was watching. His brows furrowed, Gwynplaine walked up to her.
"Mademoiselle Josephine," he said gently. "You were quite good tonight."

He opened his mouth to say something terribly rude, but stopped, his heart was pounding in his chest and felt himself holding on to a pole beside him.
The man before him made him sick, his very presence caused his mind to scurry in to many a dark places. The man was not like his Pina, not like his dear, he was deformed like a novel villain, not like a goddess. He had seen his act and found himself quite disturbed for days.
He wished the man would be cut down for his disgusting face, yet he hadn't the heart to kill one of god's own clowns.
He stood trying desperately to regain his emotions.
((Sorry he's a terrible fellow))

((Oh no, we need horrible people. If everyone's sweet to him, why the angst?
Also, sorry for butting in, but I though it'd up the ante for everyone and Gwyn can always duck out in a bit.))

Josephine turned to the very familiar voice with a smile.
"Monsieur Gwynplaine! How nice to hear from you again...and, thank you, I was afraid that someone might notice I'd gone off-rhythm near the end."

"I'm sure no one did," he said. "You pulled it off well; they were quite captivated."
He wasn't sure whether to mention the odd man watching, looking rather ill under his considerable pallor.
"How have you been, mademoiselle?"

((Thanks, like I told Sarah, he's kind of my outlet for all the terrible things the world has to offer, if it's evil or taboo or just simply weird, he does it. Also, it's cool )) Pulled it off well?! She was a delightful decedent dessert to the eye! Perfectly perfect in every way! He hoped that the man would leave soon, but knew he wouldn't, he had seen the two together before. And the way he looked at her with those gaunt awful eyes, he shuddered.

"Merci, sir, you are too kind. I'm quite well...I haven't met any new faces lately, though that can only mean that the circus is settling down with who they have. Not much else, aside from practice going well. And yourself?"
No, she didn't sense the Ringmaster there, both because of the earlier noise and because of his incredible stealthiness.

"I have not seen your friends, the knife thrower and the young lady, for some time," he reflected. "I hope, if you do need anything, you will not hesitate to call upon me."

There didn't seem to be anything else to say; he had imposed upon her already.
"Well. I am certain you are tired, after your performance. I won't impose on you anymore."

"Of course," Gwynplaine said. "Good night, then."
That had been clear enough; he had expected no more, but he was grateful for the sign. Hope, for one such as he, was futile. He'd do best to remember that, he told himself as he walked away.

As the disgusting man walked away he finally removed himself from the shadows "Wonderful show Ms. Josephine."
