"I promise" he yelled and came up next to them as he finished the rounds, before he sat down he went to the front of the dining hall and smiled "Good evening everyone."
"Evening!" The dining hall erupted, mostly in french "let us give grace and pray" John bowed his head.
"Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive from your bounty. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen."
John smiled, it was customary for him, even after grace to pray, and the people looked forward to it, although he'd never be sure why.
"O Lord thank you for bringing us all here, in good health and spirits as we sit down to feast upon all that you have given us. We'd like to once again thank you for allowing this shelter to continue to grow and prosper by your graces, to bring warm beds and clean clothes to those who need it most, not just those who can afford it." He heard some chuckles through the room and his smile widened "May you always keep us in your thoughts and watch over us as you always have. In Jesus name we pray, Amen."
There was a rousing chorus of Amen's and the spoons began to clatter, he sat down and ruffled Marie's all ready ruffled hair and began to eat.

Hazel smiled and listened to the grace and the pray. She did not understand all the words, but she felt the love in the room, and her hazel eyes were glittering. There were no other places she would rather be.
After the pray, she started eating too, happy she had a warm place to stay, could eat her fill every day, and had a family she loved more than her own life.

John looked around at his little family, he didn't even care that Marie had put Lucky's food at the table.
He was far too happy.
But he felt the emptiness that had been there since his wife died, the emptiness that seemed to grow when he had to tell Amras it couldn't be.
He knew it would fade in time and he prayed for that day to come sooner, rather than later.
