"Oh," she said, blushing a bit.
"Nothing so fantastic as all that, I'm afraid--I've been taught fencing and dueling, focusing on rapiers mostly."

"Oh goodness, not only do you have a sword you actually know how to use it. I think Mam and Da know how to fence, but Da's not much good and neither of them ever taught me because I wanted to dance."

"I...suppose it's unusual." She said, her cheeks still red.
"But mother insisted I learn so that I wouldn't ever be caught defenseless."

"Really? Oh, I mean...thank you! It's actually quite fascinating--my teacher, Oscar, was very knowledgeable and never ran out of bits of information to tell me."
Her smile was a bit sad, as Oscar had disappeared a little while ago, and it left a rather large hole in her and her mother's life.

"Sounds dreadful."
She frowned at what seemed to be a shouting match back a little ways away from where she and Kat were sitting.
"What on earth..."

"Ahhh! I've done nothing to deserve this!" A shabbily-dressed man cried as he was being dragged along behind a rather large, tough-looking brute.
"You're late on your payments, you won't give me what I've asked, so I'm taking it out of your hide."
The shabby man frantically tried to pull himself away, but couldn't escape the brute's grasp.
"I told you we can't afford it! We barely make enough to feed our children--"
"Don't care about your troubles, rent is rent." So saying, the brute dealt a swift kick to the shabby man.
Without even realizing that she had, Sophie had gotten to her feet and started striding toward the scene.
"That is quite enough, sir!"
The brute turned to see who addressed him, and sneered at the woman who'd walked up.
"Best keep yourself out of other's business, miss. This doesn't concern you."
Sophie glanced down at the shabby man, who looked as though this kick hadn't been the first he'd received. She looked back at the brute.
"Oh, but I think it does. Unhand him at once."
The brute started laughing.
"What's this? Think you're something special, do you?"
Sophie drew herself up, regally, looking quite imperious and...royal, even.
"Release him this instant or you shall suffer the consequences." She said in a commanding, authoritarian voice.
For a moment, the brute hesitated, wondering just who she could be, and murmurs from the growing crowd of watching people seemed to wonder the same thing. But the hesitation melted away and he simply glared.
"Pike off, missy." And started dragging the shabby man once again.
In swift, fluid movement, Sophie drew her rapier and aimed it at the brute, drawing a collective gasp from the crowd.
"Let. Him. Go."
The brute glanced down at the sword, then up at Sophie's face, and then back down at the sword again. There was a tense moment, as though he seemed close to continuing any way, but then he let go of the shabby man with a grunt and backed away.
"Better."
She waited until the brute had gone before sheathing the rapier and stooping down to help the shabby man to his feet.
"Are you all right, good sir?"
"Y-yes." The shabby man said, staring at her with surprise. "I thank you for your help."
"Always offered. People like that shouldn't be allowed to get away with such behavior. Tell me--why was he harassing you?"
The shabby man let out a nervous little laugh.
"Oh, we pay him rent, but the rent is so high and family's so poor that it's hard to keep it up, but moving anywhere else would likely end us."
"That will not do." So saying, Sophie reached into her purse and pulled out a rather decent sum, placing it in the man's hand. His eyes widened as he looked up at her.
"Oh, my lady, I can't possibly--"
"Please, take it. You need it far more than I do."
"Thank you, miss! Bless your kind heart!"
It wasn't until the shabby man had left that she realized she had an audience--and that they were all staring at her with various degrees of wonder or interest. Of course, that's when she felt her cheeks redden.
"Oh...oh come now! Certainly one can be charitable!" She said, her voice wavering with embarassment. There were a few a chuckles, and some mutterings, as the people dispursed. And even...was that applause?
Still quite flustered at what had just happened, and with all those witnesses, she turned back to where Kat was sitting.
((Holy shit that was longer than I'd intended it to be. Uh...sorry about that. <_<))

((I LIED. quick pass before bed.))
*Kat looked vaguely stunned for a moment, then clapped enthusiastically.*
"Brilliant!" *Was the only word she could say.* "Why didn't you say you really were some kind of defender of the less fortunate?"

Sophie, still red-faced, sat next to Kat.
"I...I'm not! I just...couldn't stay sitting..."
Little did she realize, it was just the beginning.

"I'll have to brush up on that dancing-as-martial-arts deal, then..." *She said, tucking her arm amicably into Sophie's.*
